Default Looking for a program that will allow downloads from YouTube using Chromium browser

    Hello.

Can anyone recommend a program I can put on my desktop computer that will allow me to download videos from YouTube? I'm using Leap 42.2 (64 bit) and Chromium Version 55.0.2883.75 (64-bit).

All the research I've done indicates that Chrome has no YouTube add-ons and purposefully blocks downloads from YouTube, so a third-party application would be necessary **if** downloading from YouTube on my Chromium browser is even possible.

I've also used Video Downloadhelper 6.3.1 with Firefox 50.1.0. Sometimes YouTube videos will load using that program, but other YouTube videos simply are not recognized by Video Downloadhelper. For example this one won't download in Firefox. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coK5US8tfK4

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

I use youtube-dl occasionally. It is on the Packman repo. It is a CLI program and comes with a man page.

When I search for packages with the word youtube on YaST > Software > Softweare Manager, I do not only see youtube-dl, but also others like heldenviewer. Did you try?

If you go to extensions in Chromium and then get more and search video downloader some should pop up. I don't know how well they work.

I use one with Firefox that seems to work well from mozilla. An alternative if you use firefox etc instead. It's here

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/fir...youtube-saver/

Some of the streams come in 2 parts. Video and audio. Given the latest version of ffmpeg it will merge these for you. They provide a binary for it on there site and it can be put into any directory you want so it doesn't mess up dependencies etc.

Actually I don't use one but was interested having seen your post so installed it. There is also another famous one on firefox's site. Wouldn't work for me and I didn't fancy giving it privileges via apparmor. I set it up so that it shouldn't need that and it still wouldn't work.

I use Download YouTube Videos as MP4 script with grease monkey on Firefox
    https://github.com/gantt/downloadyoutube
afaik you can use scripts nativly on Chromium or with Tampermonkey

    edit
it has issues with the new youtube interface
    https://www.youtube.com/new
that one pops up now and again depending on the tests google do on us

another addon/app is uget (it's included in the main repo)

youtube-dl was on the computer already. I did not know that I had it and was unaware of this program.

Tried it and it works! All I had to do was update (as root) using: youtube-dl -U

    Thanks very much.

Tried them a few days ago. Unfortunately they all seem to say that they won't work with YouTube.
Thanks for the reply. I was directed to youtube-dl and it works so far.

For the life of me I feel so very stupid. Today I can't find where youtube-dl is putting the downloaded videos. I thought they went onto my desktop when I was doing this last week, but now I've downloaded three videos and can't find any of them. Looked everywhere I can think of but no luck.
    Suggestions on where to look?
    Thanks.

SMPlayer is the best You Tube player. Also very good for streaming .m3u8 extension and grabs less CPU usage compared to VLC.

    Give it a try!

I'm not looking for a video player. I have plenty of those including SMPlayer.
I'm trying to download YouTube videos using youtube-dl but can't find where the downloads are going on the computer.
