Thread: Screen Savers

  1. Default Screen Savers

    Hello Guys;

I just installed SUSE 42.2 Leap with KDE Plasma desktop a few days ago (newby to Linux).

I can't find a way to get screen savers working?

My laptop screen goes blank (shuts down) after 2-3 minutes and i'd like to have a screen saver running instead of shutting off the screen.

    Thank you!!

I am not running the new Plasma, but the settings you are looking for were in Settings=>Display and Monitor=>Screen Locker in earlier version of KDE.

afaik the screen savers have been removed from plasma 5,
I might be mistaken but I think the only way to get a screen saver running under plasma 5 is by calling xscreensaver
I haven't gotten around to doing this but I remember seeing a script that started xscreensaver after a certain amount of idle time

Isn't shutting down the screen the best way to save the screen (and power)?

Sorry i jumped the gun..Screen savers arn't working after all..

I followed the post instructions. and downloaded the Xscreensaver stuff.
i went into settings and set screensaver to auto start and clicked enable.

I typed in xscreensaver-demo and it let me set up the screensaver, I looked them all over and liked Boboule the best..

But my laptop screen is still shutting down after 2-3 minutes?? No screensaver!

I opened kconsole and typed xscreensaver and it says "xscreensaver is already running on terminal 0".

Is the KDE desktop on terminal 0 ?

I know you can press ctrl alt and an F1,F2 etc..key to change terminals.

Laptop settings for shutting the screen: check this ==> Menu ==> Configure Desktop ==> Hardware ==> Power Management ==> all sorts of stuff in there that will shut you off independent of xscreensaver

A lot of people don't want to shut down the screen and don't need any security or locking functions either. They just want something interesting to look at other than the desktop.

xscreensaver offers some options, my favorite is GLSlideshow that will cycle through your photo collection.
