Thread: KDE is down the drain...

  1. #1

Default KDE is down the drain...

I'm a long time Opensuse & KDE user and when I talk about KDE, I mean the KDE
desktop environment, the KDE framework, (Plasma,) KWin, the modified Qt libraries and all
applications like Dolphin, Kate, Okteta, etc. that have dependencies to one of the former.

Will there ever be a stable version of KDE that will be supported for at least another
    3 years by major distro's?
Supported as in: fixing bugs and backporting them and offering them as automatic updates
    to the stable version?

KDE is unstable and full of bugs. When most bugs have been fixed and KDE is finally stable,
support stops and a new major version is offered which again is unstable and full of bugs.
At that moment Opensuse stops offering the old stable version.

The distro managers point to KDE and KDE points to the distro managers.

KDE users are guinea pigs for ever, all for the pleasure of programmers who prefer to introduce
new features and experiments but don't feel like fixing bugs because it's boring.

And no, a rolling distribution is not a solution in a production environment where things need to
    be stable and tested.

KDE4 is still fully usable on 42.2 and if you so choose, you can install KDE3 (or Trinity) or 42.2 as well, I don't see what the point here is. You're not forced to use bleeding edge.

openSUSE Leap 42.2 is listed by KDE as offering the Plasma version 5.8 LTS:
<https://community.kde.org/Distributions#openSUSE> -- where LTS == "Long Term Support"
    <https://www.kde.org/announcements/plasma-5.8.0.php>
The KDE Community have announced that Plasma version 5.8 will be supported for 18 months beginning October 2016.
(You need to play the video on the KDE Announcements URL to hear the "18 months LTS" statement.)

I have moved to LXQt and get the best of both worlds. Almost all KDE apps run fine under LXQt and I have had no stability issues.

However, I dispute your assertion about KDE’s general stability. Both KDE3 and KDE4 had several years of stability; there were problems when KDE4 first came out just as there have been with the KDE5 frameworks. But there have been long periods of stability.

My personal experience of KDE5 is that it seems much more bug-free on openSUSE than on other GNU/Linux distributions.
Perhaps KDE's own forum would therefore be a more suitable target for such a critique. Most of my time in KDE is spent
inside konsole, and I find it very stable.

Yes, it's been mostly OK for me from version 5.8 but why was numbering
system of 5.0 to 5.7 used instead of 5.0 alpha/beta/rc? I know they did
the same for KDE4 as they admitted beforehand that the early releases
were only suitable for testing; this time they wait to admit Plasma5
wasn't fit for general public to use until the release of 5.8.

KDE4 was OK from 4.3 and Plasma5 from 5.8. Wonder how long we'll have to
wait for a Plasma6 to be usable? 6.13?

... actually, I suspect it might be version 6.66?

I heard some years ago that 666 was a miscalculation for the sign of the
Devil and it should have been 616 - so 6.16?

Still got a little spooked a while back when I went to the butcher's and
my bill was totted up to £6.66. I then walked across to the Londis store
and when I took my purchases to the checkout, the bill came to £6.66.
    Shiver!
