Today there was an update (v24.0.0) to flash that breaks a program that
displays images from a file directory in a special format (it is a
scientific viewer used for work, so dumping flash once and for all is not
a choice I can make right now).
The previous version (11.2.202.644-1.1) works fine (tested in a laptop
which I have not updated yet). I know that it is closing a loophole to
prevent executing files in a local folder. However while in windows there
seems to be a way to allow this in the new versions, but I have no idea
if a similar setting can be done in Leap 42.2.

(11.2.202.644-1.1) in rpm form? Going into Yast, shows only the latest
version from the packman repo.
Also, maybe the settings you are looking for in the new version are in:
Adobe Flash Player Preferences > Advanced Tab > Trusted Location Settings Button.

Thank you OrsoBruno! That file, still available from the Adobe site,
however has no rpm inside.
I am unsure how to install from the tar.gz file as the instructions
included in the archive do not seem to reflect the locations of the files
I find in Leap 42.2 when I installed flash (the latest version) from Yast.
The instructions in the tar.gz file specify (I added the numbers):

Copy libflashplayer.so to the appropriate browser plugins directory.
At the prompt type:
cp libflashlayer.so <BrowserPluginsLocation>
OK that is fine as the file to replace exists in Leap at:
/usr/lib64/browser-plugins/
However the next step:

Copy the Flash Player Local Settings configurations files to the /usr
directory. At the prompt type:
sudo cp -r usr/* /usr
In the current version installed (24.0.0) I do not see anything called
flash-player-properties or kcm_adobe_flash_player.so under the /usr
folder.
According to Yast, this is the file and folders list:
Does this mean that for to install the firefox plugin the only part I
need to replace is libflashplayer.so ? There is no “flashplayer”
executable in the tar.gz archive

Hm… where do I find the Adobe Flash Player Preferences?
The Flash Player standalone has no Preferences tab in my install of Leap.

Hmmm. In 13.1, you can find the settings in Configure Desktop->Personal Information.
I do not know if it has been moved in LEAP.
I really must get off my butt and get LEAP installed in a test location and start playing around with it! Just, I have so many things to do in so many directions, and I am getting old & lazy!

Well, I tried just replacing that .so file with the one from previous
version and it allows firefox to run the flash application again.
I think I will write some script to switch between the old and new flash
versions as needed. A bit of a pain, and not the most secure solution,
but at least I can use the reader again until a better solution is found.

You seem to use NNTP to access the forums. That means that you circumvent the obligatory choosing of an openSUSE version when you start a new thread. Can you please next time give it a prominent place in your thread title? It is now somewhere halfway your explanation and thus unknown when people use the titles of new threads to see if they can help and it is unknown when starting reading the text.
The instructions to install from the tar.gz archive are consistent with what gets installed by flash-plugin-11.2.202.644-release.x86_64.rpm downloaded from the Adobe site: if you were looking for something different maybe I misunderstood your question.
Anyway, just replacing libflashplayer.so should revert the Firefox flashplayer plugin to the previous version, as you already saw.
But that way docs and licenses (possibly settings) are for the new version though.
Adobe Flash Player Preferences is launched by the /usr/share/applications/flash-player-properties.desktop file.
Here on Gnome just typing “Flash” in the application finder brings up that launcher; KDE should behave in a similar way AFAIK.

Oh, sorry I was not aware of such requirement. I did mention Leap 42.2 in
my first post, but not in the Subject. I see the logic for this now.

The settings came with “flash-player-kde” (if I remember correctly). But now there’s a “flash-player-gnome” but there isn’t a KDE equivalent. So I think the settings mentioned are available only with Gnome (and perhaps XFCE and other desktops that use Gnome applications).
