Thread: Hot and noisy laptop

    Default Hot and noisy laptop

    Hey!
I use openSUSE Tumbleweed with Plasma 5 and i noticed that my laptop becomes hot (and noisy) doing nothing. CPU usage is about 0-5% but the temperature is about 65-67*C. Though there's no anything like that in Windows 10... Is it just a problem of KDE?
    CPU: Intel i7 4720HQ.

In order to help you better we need some system specifications. On what hardware are you running Tumbleweed? Then other Tumbleweed users could chime in.
It could be faulty hardware or maybe a proprietary graphics card.

You can see some hardware information by typing this in a terminal:

    Code:
    sudo lspci
Paste the information here between code tags.

I thought you might install a proprietary driver for your graphics card but it is everything Intel and should run just fine but the temperatures are really high.

I can only speak of experience that watching HD videos in a browser window consumes a lot of CPU regardless if Flash or HTML5, especially when using Firefox as it mostly never uses hardware decoding on Linux with Intel cards compared to a Windows box.
Though you could use something else to watch videos from Youtube, like mplayer, VLC, mpv or even youtube-dl.

This seems to be an Optimus system, please tell us what measures you have taken regarding the Nvidia card in your system.

After another look I see indeed Nvidia there.
