Cannot enter installation and get stuck

I already have a Windows. I want to install an openSUSE together with Windows. However, when I booted an installation by UEFI, it stopped here as shown in the picture below. I tried to search for solutions, but no one worked yet. Does anyone also encounter this problem and any suggestion or solution? Thanks.http://a1.qpic.cn/psb?/28224141-81b5-4fbb-b4e4-c55cdba8c2bd/rD.7nBnOS5FwG3EzE.pEmPXB5dHnInEuYLiE2ig4psI!/b/dPYAAAAAAAAA&bo=eASAAgAAAAAFB9o!&rf=viewer_4

I’m facing the same problem. System: Xeon CPU E3-1505 2.8GHz.

Your system seems to freeze when loading the iwlwifi driver.

Try to add “brokenmodules=iwlwifi” to the boot options (as line#3 in your screenshot suggests).

Hi
Sometimes if booting from a USB device it doesn’t like USB 3.0, check BIOS has a legacy USB option, use a USB port that is/will switch to USB 2.0.

Hi malcolmlewis,

yes, BIOS has a Legacy boot order option and it is checked.
no, this laptop doesn’t have USB 2.0 ports and I don’t know if any of its USB ports will switch from 3.0 to 2.0.

There is a bug reported on Sep 2016 on the same problem in LEAP 42.2, which I experienced as well when trying to install LEAP 42.2 RC1 this week. So for me it happens on both the Tumbleweed (29 Oct 2016) and LEAP 42.2 RC1.

Again:

If you have a legacy BIOS, you should just be able to type that in at the install DVD’s boot menu (where you can choose between Installation, Upgrade and a few other things).
On UEFI, press ‘e’ and append the option to the line starting with “linux” or “linuxefi” (likely the latter in this case… ), and press F10 to boot the installation.

Be sure you use the same boot method (MBR or EFI) for all OS you install mixing causes problems

The problem with LEAP RC1 persists. I haven’t tested Tumbleweed yet.
There is a difference though. Before adding the line brokenmodules=iwlwifi, when it hangs the message is “drivers: iwlwifi*”, after adding said line the message is “driver: iwlwifi”, no asterics.

Did you really add just “brokenmodules=iwlwifi”?
The screenshot seems to suggest that you actually typed “brokenmodules=iwlwifi_”…

The same happened with Tumbleweed DVD snapshot 20161026. It hangs at drivers: iwlwifi, again no * after, when I include the line “brokenmodules=iwlwifi”

Yes Wolfie3233, I’m sure I added “brokenmodules=iwlwifi”, without the space.

Not space, but underscore…

Well, if that doesn’t help, then it’s not iwlwifi that freezes/crashes, but something afterwards.

Can you switch virtual consoles with Ctrl+Alt+F1 to Ctrl+Alt+F10?
There should be a kernel log on one of them which would maybe provide a clue.
If you don’t find one, just run dmesg on one of the consoles.

HI Wolfi323,
That machine has only the original windows factory installation. So far I’ve not been able to install any linux on it. So, I run a linux live-usb to get the data you requested.

Below is the entire output of dmesg.

No, I meant you should do that when the installation hangs, it may show what is crashing.

Btw, what Linux LiveUSB is that?
Looks like Tumbleweed.
Is the LiveUSB working?

Hi
Looks like firmware…?

19.741150] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: no suitable firmware found!
19.741526] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Unsupported splx structure

Can wireless/bluetooth be disabled in the BIOS to see if you get further on install.

What size hard drive is in this system?

>> No, I meant you should do that when the installation hangs, it may show what is crashing.
I tried Ctrl + alt + F1 and Ctrl + alt F10 but nothing happened, I could get to any terminal. That’s why I use a Linux LiveUSB.

>> Btw, what Linux LiveUSB is that?
>> Looks like Tumbleweed.
Yes, it its the Tumbleweed 20161101 Live.

>> Is the LiveUSB working?
Yes, the OS runs, wireless doesn’t work though. The solution for my Intel Dual-AC 8260 problem is the same as here:
https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/520135-Intel-6235-firmware-load-failed-with-error-2

>> Can wireless/bluetooth be disabled in the BIOS to see if you get further on install.
I have no idea how to do this.

>> What size hard drive is in this system?
500GB

I have solved my problem by using Leap instead of Tumbleweed ISO. Maybe you
can try it. By the way, though I succeeded in installing the OS,
there is something wrong with the display driver( Intel Graphics 530). :frowning: Anyway, good luck to you.

Hi
Was that openSUSE Leap 42.2?

It’s openSUSE Leap 42.1.

Hello,
an update.

Finally, I succeeded in installing and running Tumbleweed on the HP Zbook Studio with a Skylake Xeon CPU E3-1505 2.8GHz and NVidia Quadro M1000M.

I installed Tumbleweed from the live usb and to have it running, in the BIOS, I changed the Graphics from Auto to Discrete that way I was able to run the OS. I have not yet installed the proprietary driver for the NVIDIA. The nouveau driver renders a lot of glitches on the desktop. The finger reader device is not working although it appears in the hardware information. I have not tested the thunderbolt ports yet.

Note that this may be an Optimus (Intel+NVIDIA) machine so DO NOT install the normal NVIDIA driver. Use Bumblebee. If you have installed unistall the normal driver before going to bumblebee
