Thread: Discussion thread for 42.2 Release Candidate 1 (RC1)

    Serious Issue:
KDE5.8 stalles when adding activity overview to the frontpanel.

I installed a fresh 42.2 Installation from scratch and logged into the default non-root user.
After desktop became ready, I unlocked the kde frontpanel and added the activity overview applet via double clicking. The desktop got frozen and login wasn possible: black desktop after the end of plash screen. I think its independant from used hardware. Despite of this issue kde5.8 works fine so far. other applets could be added successfully to the KDE frontpanel (kicker)

Is KDE 5.8 already ready for professional use via preconfiguration using expanded XDG-Variables? I would appreciate offering KDE3.5 alternatively.

    You mean the "Activity Pager"?
That was a known problem, that should be fixed already:
    https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=370516
I'm not sure if the fix was in RC1 though.

Btw, RC2 has been released meanwhile...

JFYI, "kicker" was the name of KDE3's panel.
The panel is integrated in Plasma since 4.0 (kdesktop and kicker have been replaced by Plasma).

"Kicker" refers to Plasma5's new application menu (that is used by default in openSUSE) now.

    Already?
That was possible right from the start in Plasma5 and KDE Frameworks5, as it uses the XDG standard config and data locations specified by $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS and $XDG_DATA_DIRS.

Or what do you mean exactly?

I would appreciate offering KDE3.5 alternatively.
    Won't happen.
The KDE3 maintainers never bothered to submit KDE3 to Leap, not even libqt3 is included IIRC.
And with the last RC released and GM being prepared next week, it's *way* too late now anyway.

KDE3 is still available from the additional KDE:KDE3 repo though, it is available for 42.2 but I have no idea whether it actually works.

lunacy! Updated my system and it works for now. But if you are crazy to add the Activity Pager with only one activity, the pager is invisible (visible when the editor-function for the panel is opened) .
If you double click thrice on the opened side-panel, the counter increases but no pager is visible.

Btw: Regrets for using wrong words for the Plasma Components...

If you updated RC1, then you are probably now running RC2.
    openSUSE Leap 15.1; KDE Plasma 5;

Just like the Virtual Desktops Pager is invisible if there is only one virtual desktop (since KDE4 times already).
At least the default one in the panel.
I'm not sure if this only applies to newly added ones, but I seem to remember not.

The Virtual Desktop Pager and the Activity Pager actually share most of the code.
So maybe something has been "forgotten" in the new activity-based "frontend".

In any case, it would probably be a good idea to report it at http://bugs.kde.org/ (component plasmashell->Pager)...

AFAIK the plasma-config has fully changed. No Order=<no> directives anymore but scrambled entry-numbers and a final AppletOrder=<,,,,> entry. My trial to put these containment directives into a logical and reasonable order failed . Further I would prefer locking down the plasma-frontpanel, so that users can change size and layout but are restricted from adding widgets. Is there any further documentation about kiosk-management in plasma 5? Unfortunately plasma doesn't use configuration paths shown with kf5-config --path config. I put a plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc in a prepended corporate path via $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS and this didn't take effect though KDE5 programs like konsole, okular worked fine with a prepared configuration .

Is there a forum to discuss these issues? Kiosk is crucial for our administration.

The KDE folks seem to have very little published information about Plasma 5 Kiosk.
There is this URL, last updated 6th September 2016, at 10:30: <https://userbase.kde.org/KDE_System_...k/Introduction>
The KDE Plasma 5 (KF5) porting progress doesn't mention Kiosk: <http://developer.kde.org/~cfeck/portingstatus-last.html>.
The Kiosk application page seems to be currently unmaintained: <https://www.kde.org/applications/system/kioskadmintool>.
Which leaves, the KDE Community forums: <https://forum.kde.org/>; or, the openSUSE Applications Forum: <https://forums.opensuse.org/forumdis...9-Applications>.

You'd best turn to the KDE devs. Kiosk is a KDE4 application

    Not exactly.
KDE's KIOSK is a way to restrict the config and what users are allowed to do.
And it is available (basically in the same way) in KF5/Plasma5 as well.

You are probably thinking of kiosktool here, which is (was) a KDE3 application to setup KIOSK restrictions via a GUI.
It got ported to KDE4 somehow, but never fully worked AFAIK.
And it is unmaintained/dead since years.

A new KF5 based tool named confine is in development, but has not been released yet.
    http://netslaughters.de/?cat=2

So currently you have to edit the config files directly to apply KIOSK restrictions.

It is true that the documentation is outdated, but basically should still apply.
There was a mailinglist discussion about KIOSK in KF5 not too long ago, this even led to important bug fixes:
