Thread: plasma 5 freezes with extensive HDD

  1. #1

Default plasma 5 freezes with extensive HDD

I used browser Chrome and Firefox and plasma freezes once with mouse working and extensive HDD access. After reset and reboot it freezes again the same way in 2-4 minutes after boot, even I don't run anything.

    Plasma 5
    Leap 42.1
    latest updates, off repos

    what graphic card and driver?
as this sounds like the nouveau or intel's sna plasma 5 bug
for nvidia install propitiatory drivers, for intel use uxa not sna

I was wrong about the freeze. It was hang due to CPU and Memory load. /usr/bin/baloo_file_extractor was loading 99% CPU and 2Gb memory. I renamed the file, that solved an issue.

that's not a graphic card it's the kernel, I'll assume you do not have an external card but a build-in intel one, there is a known bug with plasma 5 and intel chips
    https://mail.kde.org/pipermail/kde-d...st/000088.html
the fix is to use uxa acceleration
    create the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
    Code:
    kdesu kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
    and paste this content
    Code:
    Section "Device"
       Identifier "Intel Graphics"
       Driver "intel"
       Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
    EndSection
for nvidia/amd cards this will have no effect, if you have one of those install the appropriate propitiatory driver as plasma 5 does not work well ie. causes hangs with noveau (happened to me) and there are no good open sourced amd-ati drivers

Whilst agreeing with you regarding nVidia cards and nouveau, I'm
finding that Qt5.7 seems to have resolved the problems. Running Plasma
5.8 with Qt 5.6 still gives troubles but 5.7 seems to have them sorted.

Of course, this solution may not be the case for you as the problems
were dependent on the load placed on the system; during the worst of the
troubles I could set up and run a test user on this machine without
issue but on switching to the operational user it would fall in a heap
    within seconds.

I was running with kernel 4.8 but backtracked to 4.1.31 in order to
install Broadcom-wl. This retrogression appears to have had no adverse
    effect on running with nouveau.

Renaming files on your system is not a solution. A next update will undo your "change". However, you can use KDE's Systemsettings - Search to turn baloo off.

@Cloddy: I noticed on Tumbleweed today. Search ( > 100.000 emails ) is bleeding fast, mail is displayed instantly.

Thank you very much for suggestions.

    Is this baloo?
KDE settings > File Search > Enable File Search

I have Nvidia ION Graphics Processor integrated to Intel® CPU on Board Integrated Dual-core Intel® Atom™ processor 330 on ASUS AT3ION-I.
Should I use uxa acceleration? I have nvidia proprietary drivers installed (nvidia-gfxG03-kmp-default).

    Not quite true.
It will have an effect, namely that Xorg will fail to start because it will be forced to load the intel driver (which will fail if there is no intel GPU).

and there are no good open sourced amd-ati drivers
    I strongly disagree here.
Actually the AMD/ATI open source drivers are the best (open source) ones available currently IMNSHO.
And for at least some chipsets, the open source driver is reportedly even better/faster than the proprietary fglrx driver.

Though it may of course depend on the actual card/chip.
The latest ones may not be well supported yet in Leap 42.1, but that's probably not much different with other manufacturers too, e.g. Intel Skylake needs kernel 4.5 AFAIK. (Certain things are being backported to the Leap/SUSE kernels though in any case, so you can't really just judge from the version number)

    Yes.

Apparently some (big) text file gets changed/appended to constantly, and therefore it is being indexed all over again all the time, or baloo just chokes on it.
Disabling baloo should help, or excluding the folder that contains that file if you can find that out.

It should also be possible to uninstall baloo5-file which contains the indexer.

No, that's only for intel graphics chips, not nvidia. The processor does not matter here.
And just to be clear, I mention it again: with an nvidia graphics card/chip, you should *not* switch to uxa acceleration, because it will break your system (well, not completely, but you won't get a graphical session any more). It is an intel(graphics)-only thing.
