    Default Plasma 5.8 & Wayland

KDE Plasma 5.8 has been released.
    https://www.kde.org/announcements/plasma-5.8.0.php

Looks like they want us to begin using Wayland. However I guess it is still not possible if using an Nvidia graphics card. The latest news I was reading about Nvidia and Wayland was the problem with the GBM vs. EGLStreams. However it seems Nvidia has gained some traction with their proposed solution with EGLStreams.

Plasma on Wayland has come a long way in the past months. While our long term support promise does not apply to the fast-evolving Wayland stack, we think it is ready to be tested by a broader audience. There will still be minor glitches and missing features, but we are now at a point where we can ask you to give it a try and report bugs. Notable improvements in this release include:
    • Support for xdg-shell, i.e. GTK+ applications are now supported
    • Much improved touch screen support
    • Support for touchpad gestures – the infrastructure is there, there aren't any gestures by default yet
    • The “Sliding Popups” effect is now supported
    • Clipboard contents are synced between X11 and Wayland applications

Has anyone been able to update to KDE 5.8? When I try it complains about milou5 which is needed by plasma5-workspace. Some packages like milou are still in version 5.7.95. Have they forgotten some, or not yet ready?
I am using KDE Plasma5 from this repository

There are some issues with 5.8 apparently.

I assume once this is resplved for Tumbleweed Leap will be updated as well.

Good to see they are on top of it. They should remove KDE 5.8 from the repository until it is ready.

It is there for those that want to test it. You have to expect trouble if you chase every shiny shiny.

That would be true for an unstable repository but as far as I can see,
this shouldn't be one. I assumed that the clue as to which of the two
repositories below was the unstable one was in the name:

    http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...SUSE_Leap_42.1
    http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...USE_Leap_42.1/

The reason for me using the latest version of Frameworks and Qt5 is
that only Plasma 5.8 and, in particular, Qt5.7 allows me to use openSUSE
42.1 on this machine. Until now, Plasma 5 has been too 'shiny shiny'
for operational use. This view seems to be in line with that of the KDE
team judging by their announcement of the release of 5.8:

Tuesday, 4 October 2016. Today KDE releases its first Long Term Support
edition of its flagship desktop software, Plasma. This marks the point
where the developers and designers are happy to recommend Plasma for
the widest possible audience be they enterprise or non-techy home
users. If you tried a KDE desktop previously and have moved away, now
is the time to re-assess, Plasma is simple by default, powerful when
    needed.

    No, that's unrelated.

There actually was a problem with the latest timezone update in Tumbleweed, which caused the digital clock not displaying, it was not an issue in Plasma though.

Leap was not affected by this anyway. (well, it would have been because that broken timezone update had been submitted as update for 13.2 and Leap too)

There are (and were) no issues with Plasma 5.8 that prevent us from updating to it in KDE:Frameworks5.

If that's about KDE:Frameworks5: 5.8 is not even in the repository yet. It's still at 5.7.95, i.e. 5.8 beta.

The reason is simply that KDE Frameworks have been updated to 5.27.0 already last Saturday, but it will only be released today, so we cannot currently publish the repo.
As soon as Frameworks 5.27.0 is officially released, Plasma 5.8 final will be in the repo.
    Expect it later today...

You could just as well use KDE:Frameworks5:LTS though, which does have 5.8 final, the same packages that are in Leap 42.2.
This is built against KDE:Qt56, if you add those two repos you should remove KDE:Qt5 and KDE:Frameworks5 of course.

The LTS repos will stay at PLasma 5.8.x and Qt 5.6.x though, which are LTS releases.

PS: KDE:Frameworks5 is published again meanwhile, you should be able to update to 5.8 final now (and Frameworks 5.27.0).

Thanks, just noticed that it has been updated and a search for '5.7.95'
on the repo showed nothing so all should be well when I switch back to a
42.1 session from this temporary 13.2 one. [Note: the forgoing was
    typed with crossed fingers]
