Thread: Dolphin: files sorted in different order in Plasma 5.

  1. #1

Default Dolphin: files sorted in different order in Plasma 5.

In KDE 4 version of Dolphin, files are sorted thus:
    Fred
    Fred_1.00
    Fred_1.01

In Plasma 5 version it's as follows:
    Fred_1.00
    Fred_1.01
    Fred

Any setting I can change to get back to the original order?

Did you look under View->Sort By ?

Near the bottom of the dialogue, see if you have Descending checked.

(If you do not have the menu bar across the top, just go down under Control and tick the box for Show Menubar (or to Ctrl-M). Then, do as above.)

Thanks but no I didn't, because that's not the problem.

According to the way you described it in your OP, that would be exactly the problem. If it is not, then you need to describe why it is not.

Not at a machine with Plasma 5 at the moment so I can't try, but...

The "Natural Sorting" setting may be coming into play here, perhaps try changing that?

(Dolphin) Preferences -> General -> Behaviour - "Natural Sorting"

Sorry but that's not the case, the numbers would not be in the order I
specified in the original example if I changed the 'sort by' parameter.

Having said that, I have to apologise for misleading you. The problem
appeared to me to be a difference between KDE4 and Plasma 5 but it
occurred more recently than that. So far, I've found that Dolphin built
on Frameworks 5.21 sorted OK but that based on 5.26 has the problem.
My excuse is that, as you might see from my sig, my regular system is
openSUSE 13.2 as I've had little luck with Plasma5 so far on this
machine. However, 5.8 beta seems to be stable and I've been using it for
longer than previous releases and so, when I spotted this problem,
mistakenly took it for a more long-standing fault.

The previous example was also incorrect in that I hadn't realised that
the file-type extension was connected with the problem.

Let me give a more accurate example.

    Dolphin built on 5.21:
    Alpha
    Bravo
    Bravo_1.0
    Bravo_1.1
    Charlie.txt
    Charlie_1.1.txt
    Charlie_1.2.txt

    Dolphin built on 5.26:
    Alpha
    Bravo
    Bravo_1.0
    Bravo_1.1
    Charlie_1.1.txt
    Charlie_1.2.txt
    Charlie.txt

The sorting is unchanged apart from non-alphabetic and non-numeric
characters such as '_' being treated differently. I've seen this
before (several decades ago!) when a sorting behaviour changed and I
found it was related to the octal codes for certain characters having
    been altered.

Again, apologies for errors in my original post.

... thank you, but apology is not necessary, Graham. And, now that you have fleshed it out, much more understandable. Such is the nature of messages in a forum.

Check whether natural sorting of items is enabled in Dolphin settings. That's usually the reason why numbers are (or aren't) sorted oddly sometimes.

I'd tried that after Paul suggested it a few days ago but without
success. Had another go anyway. Switched off 'Natural sorting' and hit
'reload'. Nothing happened. Tried again. Nothing. Tried again. Worked!
Probably didn't try the '3rd time lucky' approach last time.

Don't you just love it when applications decide to change your settings
for you? Still, this wasn't as bad as when the format of the Dolphin
configuration files was changed in the KDE4 version.

Thanks to you and Paul for providing the solution.
