KDE Plasma 5 issues after upgrade

After having some issues with Plasma 4 recently, I upgraded to plasma 5. Things were great the first few days, enjoying the new features as well. Had some bugs where I would lock the system and have to go to tty1/2, login and issue the unlock then back to tty7.

I would like to note I have been able to bypass the issues by creating another login in the system but would like to understand the cause.

Items need help correcting.

  1. Plasma5 hangs when loading with primary user, gets to about 3/4 of the way, freezes not completing loading.
  2. When I can access the system all users hang on lockout and don’t allow password entry to unlock the system.
  3. Duel monitors, second monitor will black screen or disable, requires going into “configure desktop” to restore. Monitor is always active.

Due the the length the .xsession-errors are here in pastebin.

All help to resolve this issue is appreciated.

After many hours of reading and researching I have determined that the issue is known to KDE community and is a rather nasty bug where it appears APIs were mixed up. The root of the issue is the 5.6.5 plasma update and the QT 5.6 update as well.

???
Do you have any pointers?
What APIs were mixed up where?

The root of the issue is the 5.6.5 plasma update and the QT 5.6 update as well.

Leap 42.1 comes with Qt 5.5.1 and Plasma 5.5.4.

And Plasma 5.6.5 os not even available in the additional KDE repos yet…

So what repos are you using?

zypper lr -d

Based on feedback on IRC from the KDE community I performed another backup and wiped the system, performed a clean install of 42.1 Tumbleweed. Unfortunately the problem is back with a fully patched system.

So what repos are you using?

Now when I lock the system I get the same issue. The lock screen will not accept any input, does not matter if the system is locked for 30 seconds or the weekend. The lock screen is completely frozen on a clean install. My only option seems to be switching to TTY(1-6) and executing “loginctl unlock-sessions”

Going through various bug reports there are a number of items which could resolve it but so far I have not found a solution.

  1. Intel-ucode(ucode-install) Some note this as not being installed others note needs to be updated. Checking I have the 20150121 which seems to be the latest.
  2. chmod +s kcheckpass - I have not followed through on this yet as some messages don’t feel this is the issue.
  3. Missing kde5 in pam.d - Can confirm my new install does not have a kde5 authorization file in the pam.d directory. But others report that “login” should be sufficient which my system does have and is set correctly.
  4. Nvidia driver need 349.16-2 but this seems to be focused on dedicated video cards while my system is using an integrated graphics controller.

Any insight you can provide which will help me permanently resolve this issue would be appreciated. If any additional logs are needed please let me know.

Thanks!

What are your monitors connected to?

I do have a exfinity6 with 6 DP Ports and 2 Ports, when I use 1 DVI and 1 DP port, KDE does not load. I can use 2 DVI and 4 DP but as soon as I activate DVI and DP together KDE doe not work any more. Both 42.1 and 42.2

Hello,

I am not sure if I should open a separate thread or just jump into this one, because I think the issues I am having for the last months are strongly related to the ones of the original poster.

Setup: Leap 42.1 (default KDE install, no upgrade from older distribution); NVIDIA proprietary driver 361.45.11; 3 monitors

Issues:

  1. Unlocking the screen after locking the screen often, but not always, does not work → reboot or termination of Xserver is required.
  2. Taskbar crashes randomly (at least 20 times a day): Executing “kquitapp5 plasmashell ; /usr/bin/plasmashell --shut-up” to recover taskbar works fine.
  3. When monitors go into energy saving mode (blank screen, but not locked screen) open windows are randomly moved to other screens.

Issues 1 and 2 also occur in a 1 monitor setup.

I distinctly remember that it took ages for KDE 4 to be “kind of stable” and I often moved from bad to worse while hoping that the next upgrade would fix certain issues. At the moment Leap 42.1 with KDE is at least somewhat usable and I am battling whether or not to try an upgrade to KDE 5.6. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Aicko

The system in question is an HP Prodesk 600 with 2 display ports using adapters to DVI. Last night I disabled the “Energy Saving” settings for the disk and screen along with suspending the session.

Changing the “Energy settings” seems to help with the lock screen being accessible but still not great. Not sure how that would be related but seems to help.

I Just tried 42.2 alpha + latest updates and my 6 monitors are working again. Feels much better than 42.1 I think I will stay with that 42.2 alpha.
