OK, so your laptop has an ALC883. My view is there are three things you
    can try:
    - first - check your mixer carefully
    - second - update alsa
    - third - try a model option Its possible the second and third can be interchanged.

Reference your mixer, I note this:
    !!Amixer output
    !!-------------

!!-------Mixer controls for card 0 [SB]

    Card hw:0 'SB'/'HDA ATI SB at 0xd0000000 irq 16'
    Mixer name : 'Realtek ALC883'
    Simple mixer control 'Front',0
    Front Left: Playback 17 [*55%*] [-21.00dB] [on]
    Front Right: Playback 17 [*55%*] [-21.00dB] [on]I assume you
have it ON for a reason? Is 55% the optimal level for that, given your
    volume unhappiness?

Reference updating alsa, I noted this when searching ALC883 on the alsa
site: 'Search results - AlsaProject' (http://tinyurl.com/amunkb) and
'Search results - AlsaProject' (http://tinyurl.com/6x2krl) so there are
some updates since 1.0.17/1.0.18 of alsa.

So if you wish to try updating alsa to see if it will help, then I have
provided 6 zypper commands below. Note once you go down this path, every
time there is a kernel update, it will possibly break your sound, and
you will have to do this update again. Anyway, to update, open a
konsole or a terminal and type "su" (no quotes - enter root password
when prompted ) to get root permissions and with your pc connected to
the internet copy and paste the following six commands in sequence,
    executing them one by one:

    Code:
    --------------------
    zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...openSUSE_11.1/ multimedia
    --------------------

    Code:
    --------------------
    zypper install alsa alsa-utils alsa-plugins-pulse alsa-plugins alsa-oss alsa-tools alsa-firmware libasound2
    --------------------

    Code:
    --------------------
    zypper rr multimedia
    --------------------

    Code:
    --------------------
    zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...openSUSE_11.1/ multimedia
    --------------------

    Code:
    --------------------
    zypper install alsa-driver-kmp-pae
    --------------------

    Code:
    --------------------
    zypper rr multimedia
    --------------------
and then restart your PC and test your sound volume. Don't forget to
    check your mixer.

If that does not work by itself, then you can try the model options
again in your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file, one at a time (restarting your
alsa sound driver and mixer after each attempt), where this is the list
from the HD-Audio-Models.txt file from 1.0.19 of alsa:

    Code:

sony-assamd is associated with the ALC262 and not the ALC883. Here is
a summary list of the ALC262 options:

    Code:
    --------------------
    ALC262
    ======
    fujitsu Fujitsu Laptop
    hp-bpc HP xw4400/6400/8400/9400 laptops
    hp-bpc-d7000 HP BPC D7000
    hp-tc-t5735 HP Thin Client T5735
    hp-rp5700 HP RP5700
    benq Benq ED8
    benq-t31 Benq T31
hippo Hippo (ATI) with jack detection, Sony UX-90s
hippo_1 Hippo (Benq) with jack detection
    sony-assamd Sony ASSAMD
    toshiba-s06 Toshiba S06
    toshiba-rx1 Toshiba RX1
ultra Samsung Q1 Ultra Vista model
    lenovo-3000 Lenovo 3000 y410
    nec NEC Versa S9100
basic fixed pin assignment w/o SPDIF
    auto auto-config reading BIOS (default)
    --------------------

But when you ran the script again, it still indicates your PC has an
ALC883, and hence typically one would expect a model option from the
ALC883 (and not the ALC262) list would apply.

Note, you should only add one model option at a time. Only ONE.

Can you provide a verbal description, as how your sound works, and what
    sort of sound you get?

Erm, I might be way off track here, but I noticed earlier up the post
tree that you using the pae kernel.

Seeing as you only have 1 gig of RAM:

    1. Is that possibly causing the problems?
    2. Why use the pae kernel anyway? Have you tried a default install?
    3. Seeing as you are having problems on 2 separate machines, maybe run
am md5 checksum on the install media. The downloaded image might be a
    problem, or the disk itself.
