Just on the chance that some of you will see this:
My update of kde4.2 from Factory today seemed to bring in some extra
features - BUT it screwed up .kde4 (of which I always keep a backup).
But to no avail this time.
Had to start again. OK it was set up again 10 mins but it’s pain.
For me the login from update brought in the ‘air’ default wallpaper,
left some screwed up icons on the panel and changed my desktop folder
location from desktop to /home/username
Interesting. This seems to be leaving Geoff a little alone. I want to
know what is different with your setup Geoff. I was thinking it might be
repo’s - I’m using QT44.
I seem to recall Geoff you might be on QT45?
What about everyone else? 44/45??
I wonder if that could make the difference?

+1
And, now my widgets won’t stay where I put them. Did anyone restore
the icons? I can’t seem to get rid of the corrupted ones and I’ve lost
some links as well.

If your gecko is broken, you have a reptile dysfunction.
I had to remove ~.kde4/ folder in order to make the changes I made
permanent.
I also cannot enable “desktop” on Desktop Activity - Type. Only “Plain
desktop” is working. As soon as I activate “Desktop” I have automatic
changes like folder view reverting to home instead desktop folder,
plasmoids cannot move and more.
I also had the issues described by caf4926 and for me only removing
plasma settings solves the problem (rm .kde4/share/config/plasma*).
Maybe you want to try this before because not all settings gets lost on
this way

I had the same problem but dragged the desktop folder from the /home folder
onto the worktop and opened it. Might keep the /home folder - could be
handy.
Main thing about this update is that Knode now works for the first time - at
least it has so far.

Me too. Duplicate and triplicate panel icons, multiplicity of dead
panel icons, inconsistent behaviours when I try to correct it all by
hand. Removing plasma settings and other remedies suggested here make
no difference.
I can eventually rebuild the panel by hand, but it all turns to worms
again on next reboot or logout/in. So, for the moment, I do neither.
