Yast2 tries to install unwanted packages

I am new to openSuse though familiar with other distros. Installed
11.1-KDE from CD.

When I try to install something from yast, it lists a hell lot of other
things which it wants to install alongwith which are not related to the
stuff I wanted. That list contains Openoffice-template-presentations,
help, thesaurus etc which I never asked to install.

Now, when I install the same from CLI (with zypper), it installs clean.
Nothing extra.

For any package, Yast2 wants to install those files. But everything
works great from zypper.

I tried the dependency check from the yast2 menu, it says everything is
perfect. Still it wants to install those.

Any idea?

Zypper installs the same dependencies, it just doesn’t show them to you.
It looks cleaner. The dependencies are specified in the RPM itself.

There’s a good discussion of it in this thread.

Thanks smpoole7 for you reply. Read that tread.

But I think this is not the case. For example, I tried to install
‘yakuake’ from yast, it tell me to install those extra baggages. They
call it autoinstall. But, from zypper, it just installed that package,
nothing else. This thing happens with some other packages I want to
install. From CLI they got installed though. Yast always throws the same
list. Since I have a expensive internet connection, I didn’t say yes.

Another thing is, even if I just open Yast2 and hit ‘Accept’ (without
doing any changes), then also it shows the same list.

Then I obviously don’t understand all I know about Yast’s software
installer!

Someone else needs to pipe up. The way I learned it, dependencies are
specified in the RPM. Unless … what options are you giving to zypper
at the command line?

I am a bit lost here too.

Even i knew the same. If both zypper and yast told me that I need to
install X Y Z packages to resolve dependencies, I would have felt
better. Also, when I ask yast to check dependencies (from the menu), it
tells me everything alright!

Nothing extra. zypper install yakuake … like that.

well going through the topic i found something similar.i usually use
xfce.but i liked the gwenviewer of kde4.so i installed it from yast2.i
thought may be it will require kde runtime envi files and lib files.it
gave me a huge list as dependencies.when i checked the list i was a bit
confused to find google gadgets for kde4,gstreamer and a hell lot of
extras which i did not want.but i did not give it a second thought and i
did not try it with zypper though.after the instalation i had a full
kde4 installation.looks like i will use only zypper from now on…

I think all these packages are forced for install by YaST, because you
installed the system from the LiveCD. They are standard for the system,
and automatically installed from the DVD. But because there is not
enough space for them on the LiveCD, YaST is trying to obtain them
online.

So, no matter what are you trying to install, the first time you run
YaST, it will suggest them automatically.

Thanks Usleble for your reply.

Yes, that seems to be the case. I was suspecting that since I’ve
installed from live CD, there are some pending items in the queue. But
then I think zypper should have told me the same thing. Anyway… not
liking the package management though I think zypper is an excellent
tool.

Yes, that’s what. I never knew a thesaurus or presentation templates
for openoffice is that important for a system :-). yast force me to
install those.
