Default Plasma & X 20~60% of CPU in 11.1, pls help understand and f

I upgraded from 10.2. My 800 MHz machine was not a speed deamon but
    responded promptly.

With 11.1, it is sluggish. With "top" I see one or two "Plasma" at
10~20% and an X at 10~15% of the CPU when I am doing NOTHING.

I assume this is the result of some new fanciness?

Is there a menu of "fancy" features I can turn off?

Any other trees I should be barking up?

    Thanks.

Is this: 'X process 100% CPU usage at 11.1 KDE4 - openSUSE Forums'
(http://tinyurl.com/ddyqy2) the same thing that is happening to you?
Because I think its being worked on. Otherwise that might really be too
slow of a comp to be running SUSE. Maybe something with less of a
footprint like ****Small would be better.

No, it is not 100%... With a top refreshing every 3 seconds, it jumps
around between probably 15 or 20 and 70 or 80%, usually between 25 and
    60. This is the sum of the X and the one or two plasma's. Thanks for
    the guess and information.

Regarding my hardware, I hope not. I really like Suse and KDE and it
would be a great loss if I had to go to something else.

The machine is entirely acceptable with OpenSuse 10.2. It is not
zippy, but I am never annoyed. I would agree with Aaron Seigo in his
block portion quoted below) at: 'aseigo: On KDE4 Performance'

There should not be fanciness that I cannot turn off. I have not been
able to find anything to turn off, I hope it is there. (1) When I am
not doing anything, when nothing is running, when nothing is happening,
the GUI should not consume 800,000,000 +/-250% instrunctions per second.
    (2) I should be able to disable fanciness that runs when I AM doing
    something.

    Quote from URL given above:

"There will always be some things, like desktop effects used in KWin,
Plasma and KRunner, that simply require a decent video card. However,
all of these programs should be runnable without those effects and
retain an acceptable user experience even on older (within reason; e.g.
not 15 years old hardware. Good news is that they do, given decently
    supported hardware."

"It is not acceptable if KDE 4 feels slower than KDE 3, and it is not
acceptable if KDE 4 requires brand new hardware. At the same time, if
the drivers for older hardware are simply not up to the task and those
drivers aren't updated ... there's not much we can do about it and that
hardware, which would otherwise be capable of better things, shouldn't
be part of our target. It's also absolutely acceptable if certain
features only work if the hardware can support them; this is mostly
applicable to features reliant on more advanced graphics techniques."

I think you should make sure that
    1) desktop effects are unchecked in configure desktop -> desktop
    effects -> general
    2) remove all plasmoids that do system or network monitoring and use
    gKrellm instead
