GNOME memory use question

Hello,

now that I am using GNOME, and having checked the use of memory I see
it is high. For example, right now I am running Epiphany (3 tabs) and
the system monitor reads my machine is using 737 MiB (37%) of 2 GiB
memory.

Although it does not feel bad, how can I optimize it? Is there any
other trick besides stopping some services or recompiling the kernel?

Thanks in advance.

Hi
What OS version 11.1? Did you install the openSUSE version or from
source?

What was the memory usage according to ‘system monitor’ before you
started the application?

Have a look at the top and free commands, you will find they are
different than system monitor.

I’m currently running, crossover/winword, crossover/garmin mapsource,
claws-mail, firefox (6 tabs), epiphany (3 tabs) and my memory is at
770MB and swap at 50MB (1GB physical ram) according to the system
monitor.

As well as compiz-fusion etc and cpu usage at between 25 and 50% on
this 1.7GHz notebook.

You could look at the preload setup and remove applications you don’t
use often?

I installed the openSUSE 11.1 from the DVD media. Right after install I
get about 488 MiB, and after adding another panell and add rearrange the
applets more like the classic GNOME, memory usage reaches almost the 600
MiB with firefox running only (1 tab). I have not activated the
desktop’s effects.

Those top and free commands are really good, thanks!

I think that those applets and the new panel just take alot of memory.
Could be that the reason for the memory increase? I think they are.
