KDE 4 mysteries

Hello,

I have just installed SuSE 11.0 and got KDE 4 with it. I am used to the
much more usable KDE 3 from my old SuSE 10, and have difficulties
finding answers to some basic questions:

  1. The images I select as desktop background all appear stretched, but
I can’t find a way of controlling this.

  2. Amarok plays music fine, but all other system sounds give crackling
noises through the speakers. I can’t find any way of stopping the very
    annoying system sounds.

  3. Is there a way of going back to an earlier version of KDE without
    having to re-install the OS?

I will be eternally grateful for any advice.

Abe

Right click desktop and select desktop settings in that pane you will see a drop down box that gives you the choice of how the background it applied: scaled centred maxpect etc…

either try turning the PCM or volume down with kmix or whichever mixer you are using or turn notification off in the desktop settings>notifications section.

you might have 3.5 installed any way just logout and on the login screen there is a sessions selection have a look there to see if the option of kde3 is there if not then just go back to yast and install from your installation media, 3 and 4 can co-operate together so no probs there just select 3 from that sessions menu and login and you are good to go.

Hello again,

Well, I tried.
On the desktop I have already tried right click → configure desktop,
but found very limited options there. I can choose wallpaper, control
its frequency of change (for slideshow), choose desktop theme and decide
whether desktop icons are shown, shadowed and aligned. There is none of
the options you refer to, which were of course the ones I was looking
for right from the start. This feel like a Microsoft tool - looks pretty
but is essentially useless…

  1. I turned PCM all the way down but to no avail. For example, when I
backspace on an empty command prompt the sound I get is not only
unclear, but it also reverberates for several seconds, as if it has an
    echo.

  2. Will try KDE 3, because 4 is not my cup of tea at all.

Thanks,

Abe

Hi again,

One more point: there is no option to select KDE 3 from the “session”
menu in the login screen. There is KDE 4, TWM, Custom, Failsafe and
perhaps one more.

It looks like as far as KDE is concerned only 4 was installed, yet I
don’t recall being asked for any preference during the installation
process.

Thanks again,

Abe

You can add kde 3 from Yast - Software - Software Management
filter by Patterns

check
kde3base
kde3desktop

accept

Now kde3 will be an option

You might want to use this repo by adding it to your list
‘Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_11.1’
(http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_11.1/)

it will give you the very latest kde3

Box: Linux 2.6.25.18-0.2 x86_64 | OS 11.0 | (KDE4.1.85) “3.1” | M2N4-SLI
| AMD 64 X2 5200+ | nVidia 8500GT | 2GB RAM

If you want decent sound in KDE4, you have to add the packman repo and
update libxine1. After doing so KDE4 will use xine as engine instead of
the sucky gstreamer/fluendo.

BTW: If you turn down your PCM completely you will not hear any sound.

Many thanks, I have KDE 3 now and the background images look normal
again.

I will start a different thread regarding the sound problems, because
they persist into KDE 3 and should not be part of my original KDE 4
posting.

Thanks again,

Abe

That’s strange. On my default openSUSE 11.1 KDE 4.1.3 installation, the
Desktop settings have all the option’s you say your missing.

openSUSE 11.0; Kernel 2.6.25-pae; Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - 2.4Ghz; 6GB
DDR2 RAM; M-Audio Delta 44 Audio Interface; 640GB SATA Disk.
