Hello all, I must apologise in advance for this thread, it is a rant
about things that have happened today with my laptop.
For those who noticed, i tried to get the wlan card to start on boot
(instead of with knetwork manager which needs kde to be logged in - no
use for fstab etc). I switched into ifup and the wifi card refused to
connect
i had earlier switched from the default pae kernel to default so
figuring somehow i buggered that up figured i would re-install the OS
but select ifup when going through the install
great, now it works but there are now a host of other things, some
software related, others are 3 year old child related!
the software things:
previously, it had detected the intel on board card, enabled 3d and
all was well; now when 3d is enabled, the system crawls along at a
snail’s pace, if not, less. disabling it doesn’t make much difference
either, although the same device was detected, it just will not do ANY
decent processing of graphics - webpages stutter when scrolling down,
flash animations jump and it’s generally a total dog
the “nipple” mouse no longer works, again, 1st install it found it
and let me use either nipple or touchpad; i prefer the nipple but as
it’s not working i’m frustratingly having to use the TP. NOTHING
hardware wise has changed!!! NOTHING! But it REFUSES to acknowledge
the presence of the nipple mouse; sax2 has three tabs for the mouse,
“touchpad”,“touchpad” and “ps2 mouse” - very odd especially as there is
no ps2 port on the laptop :\
moving the mouse using the touchpad - it’s not responsive, I have to
press the pad, wait for 2 - 3 seconds and then attempt to move the
cursor; this is the same if 3d accel is on or off, but i did notice that
if i turn 3d acc off, the cursor seems to slow down by about 50% if not
more so it’s impossible to actually use anymore.
3 year old child related:
my 3 year old son seems to have eaten the nipple, does anyone know if i
can buy a replacement anywhere, i did a google search for “dell d630
nipple”, wow, you should have seen some of the results lol
conclusion:
im really annoyed, so much so, i am putting xp pro on it, just to see
if i can replicate any of the issues here (well, the graphics one at
least) i just wanted to play trackmania, assault cube and a few other
things which seemed to work fine before the re-install of the O/S

Which thourough investigation of the output (of the child, not of the
mouse) it must be possible to retrieve the nipple.

ewwww! erm no, it’s ok thanks, i’d rather it be lost forever!
so the machine decides to give me one last insult; windows does not
install, it gets beyond the “press f6 to install 3rd part drivers” then
hangs
oh and to top it all off, all my jeans have holes in the left knee,
except one pair and the zipper is broken and keeps coming down.
lols, yeah he is a curious thing!
well yes, it was a rant and i feel better for getting it off my chest;
one of those days i guess!
just fyi things appear to be looking up:-
the nipple turned up in a bin
the cursor now moves with the nipple re-placed
i re-installed (again, 5th time now?) and -
1 wlan0 is starting on boot with ifup
2 desktop is responding fine even with 3d accl turned on
3 touchpad is also working as expected
i am happy with suse once again (well, on the laptop at least - it’s
worked a-ok on the desktop pcs!)
i think i’d best call it a day and go to bed … unless my bed breaks
lol!
