Thread: Default applications can't be changed

    Default Default applications can't be changed

    AKA file associations. This happened more than once to difference file types when I tried to change them in plasma 5 settings. This time it is the jpeg.

    I can move gwenview to the top, and when I apply, after a few seconds, shotwell viewer will still be on top and be the default application.

    Any changes you make with the KDE file associations should be reflected in ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list

    Try making the changes using Configure Desktop (System Settings) > Applications > File Associations or do
    Code:
    kcmshell5 filetype
    When I make the changes they are being applied to mimeapps.list as expected. For example, I shifted showfoto up the list, and when I now click on a .jpeg file it is this application the opens
    Code:
    cat ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
    [Added Associations]
    image/jpeg=kde4-showfoto.desktop;kde4-gwenview.desktop;kde4-okularApplication_kimgio.desktop;pto_gen.desktop;gimp.desktop;

    [Default Applications]
    image/jpeg=kde4-showfoto.desktop;

    I find it easier to make default application to open a certain file/image
    by right clicking the file/image and open with other application and make the
    application I choose to open as the default.

    I just did that and it worked.

    Thanks for all the help.

    Now I'd like to know if the plasma 5 setting is problematic or it is just me...

    Works as expected for me (as I already illustrated).

    Your problem is similar to Bug 931316: Cannot set default browser in Plasma 5

    My experience is that it actually works. The problem is with the setting. If I set the default browser the way I want, then it works. But when I recheck the settings, I see it saying that my change didn't work. The settings screen is showing the original defaults rather than the current setting.

    I haven't tested this, but I have heard that it works the way it should if one switches to "upstream branding". And, if that's true then it is an opensuse bug.

    I'm not completely sure that your issue is the same bug. I suggest you test to see whether it works, instead of testing by looking at the setting screen where you set the default.

    are you sure you don't have the old kdesettings installed, that was my issue I didn't notice I was configuring kde4 settings yet I was using plasma 5.
    check and see if
    /usr/share/applications/kde4/kdesystemsettings.desktop
    is there, if it is edit it with a text editor and replace

    GenericName=System Settings
    with
    GenericName=KDE4 System Settings
    and
    Name=System Settings
    with
    Name=KDE4 System Settings

    I'm not sure if that was a reply to me. However, I am using the Plasma 5 settings.

    nope it was to the OP, afaik there is a bug (or packaging error in LEAP) if you don't manually edit
    /usr/share/applications/kde4/kdesystemsettings.desktop it will replace plasma 5's settings menu item
