    Default Kde5 , leap 42.1 what a mess

Very disappointing this release by openSuse.
I had 13.2 running, but for some stupid reason I decided to give a go with this leap.
Why did openSuse calls this "leap" a conservative and stable, with this plasma 5 ?
I have constantly to go to desktop configuration and change the compositor to ease all this flickering.
Is there a way to completely remove this plasma 5 and have the KDE4 ?

    Thanks

    Yes.

    Reinstall 13.2, or even 13.1.

However, KDE4 is no longer maintained upstream. So you either volunteer to maintain it for opensuse, or it's plasma 5.

On the positive side, this has been a lot better than the change from Gnome 2 to Gnome 3.

make sure you are using desktop settings for plasma 5 you could have kde4's settings app and running that one by mistake.
kde4 is dead just not yet buried if you want it you need to go back to 13.2.
    what is your plasma5 issue?
there is a bug with nouveau and nvidias card which is solved by installing the propitiatory nvidia drivers.
there is also a bug with dolphin's activities plugin caused by a couropt data base there are several fixes for it just search the forums for dolphin crashes on plasma5.
Also did you apply the updates?
there are quite a lot of updates for plasma 5.4 and there is even a release of plasma 5.5 for Leap here
    http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...USE_Leap_42.1/
if you want to use it you need to dup to it.

    ok, thanks, I'll check that.
For me it's unstable. I work in web developing , I don't know how fix plasma 5. But I've always like kde because of dolphin.
If I can't get around this, yes, I've have to go back to 13.2 or some other distro.

    Thanks

I know what you mean and i switch back to kde4 with this:

    # zypper in kdebase4-session kdebase4-workspace \
    kdebase4-workspace-ksysguardd kscreen kscreen-lang

But i must say that kde4 with the breeze style looks great in all apps
(kde, qt*, gtk*) so leap works perfect here for me. There is also
dolphin4 in the repos which do a better job than dolphin because this
    one ignores the SingleClick.

So again, instead i was not so much happy with my kde5 test from my view
this was all upstream and in leap the packages makes the best out of the
situation that upstream don't support kde4.

I think you are experiencing the dolphin activities bug, the fix is to delete from outside of plasma5
    ~/.local/share/kactivitymanagerd/
so you need to login to a different desktop I used lxqt.
or disable the activities plugin in Dolphin's settings->Services

If I can't get around this, yes, I've have to go back to 13.2 or some other distro.
you can go back to 13.2 I don't know how well kde4 runs under leap I thought it was not available, about other distro's this is not an openSUSE bug it's a general kde bug
    https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=351485
afaik all distro's have moved on to plasma, opensuse is one of those that provides tons of desktop environments, I'd recommend trying lxqt as it's a light qt5 desktop and strangely enough dolphin didn't crash on me under lxqt.

Okay, i don't use activities (or desktop search or the plasma desktop)
because at the end i use kde4 nearly in the same way as kde3 and i don't
use a clean install of leap because i even let "zypper dup" do the job
but for me i don't recognize a difference between 13.2 and leap with the
only exception that there be a lot of kf5 apps. So still again you can
install kde4 under leap and thanks to the packagers to have this option.

I run lxqt in combination with xfwm4 (i like transparent panels) on my
laptop and it is very nice ... but i use this combination under
    archlinux

Well, after installing the fglrx drivers, things got a little better, but just now, I made the mistake to try to install a windows decoration, and BANG, complete flickering, a kde crash, I had to logout between all those flashes in a hard way.

For what I can see, for now, more or less, we're stuck with this theme breeze ?

As I said, I think this leap jump, hasn’t gone very far, it's very disappointing for a mature distro as opensuse to wrap a unstable desktop for there users.
And this is not a kde issue, the bugs are there, it's a decision by decisions makers, to make it available as stable.

I'm very found of kde, I think it's the best desktop not just for linux, but I've always was a step behind, in a stable version.
I think it was to soon to release this leap with this plasma5.

afaik you can still use oxygen under kf5 start kde settings and make a switch, make sure you're using kdesettings5 as you might have kdesettings from kde4 and that one replaces the new one in the start menu.

no plasma 5 was available for 13.2 since the beginning it just was not the default, it was kde upstream that decided kde4 is dead and no more work would go in it opensuse had nothing to do with it, actually it was the reason for the first time ever sle12 to ship with gnome instead of kde.

I've noticed, that upon the session login, there is 2 options for kde. I've try both, but didn't see any differences...
As I recall, one just says plasma, and the other one kde...something.

Where can one see what kind of kde settings are active ?

    thanks
