KDE not locking screen after update

Hi everyone,

After OpenSuSE last update I got some problems.

One of then is that Kernel 4.12 crash DELL USB (even 2.0) and so I can not use keyboard or mouse, so I setup to automatic boot with Kernel 3.16. I think this one happen when I upgrade to LEAP 42.1, but that’s just to better explain, no problem with it, I can wait for a solution.

Yast2 stop working too, after Google about it, the only solution that works was remove Yast2 with zypper, some other packages was removed with it, but I generate an automatic list of all packages removed, and then I installed again everything. After that Yast2 back to works.

I don’t know if something is missing configuration after Yast2 remove/install, but now my KDE 4.14.10 stop lock screen.

I Google about it and:

  • All packages related to screen saver or screen locker are installed
  • kscreenlocker
is not installed and I could not find it in One Click Install - qdbus org.kde.ksmserver /ScreenSaver Lock
not working also, don’t give any message too, just run and nothing.
  • ~/.xsession-errors
    is empty - **CTRL+ALT+L **
    not working too.

What else can I do?

Thanks.

The current kernel in Leap 42.1 is 4.1.13.
If you only have 4.1.12 (I suppose that’s what you mean, a 4.12 does not exist at all yet ;)) your system is not up-to-date.
In that case, try to install all updates with “zypper patch” or YaST->Online Update.

I don’t know if something is missing configuration after Yast2 remove/install, but now my KDE 4.14.10 stop lock screen.

There is no “KDE 4.14.10”. And KDE4, the desktop, is not available/installable in Leap at all.

After what “update” did that happen? After you upgraded to Leap, or after installing normal updates?

How exactly did you do the upgrade to Leap?

Can you please post your repo list?

zypper lr -d

Yes, my mistake, it is Kernel 4.1.13.

My OpenSuSE is “old” I think it is a 10.1 the first install (so it may have some old packages), after that I always upgrade the same installed system, I think Kernel problem started after upgrade from 13.2 to LEAP 42.1, but this one I checked that is a Kernel it self problem, so that is only to explain my “old” Kernel.

The screen lock problem started only last week, after LEAP’s 42.1 update.

Updates are checked each hour, every new one is installed.

KDE version I got from KDE Help -> About

zypper patch result:

You have many 13.2 repos in that list so you probably have mixed packages. Your lucky it runs at all

So it is 4.1.13, not 4.1.12? You wrote 4.12 so I suspected the latter…

Yes, old kernels are not replaced at upgrades.
Normally the 2 “latest” kernels are kept.

The screen lock problem started only last week, after LEAP’s 42.1 update.

So the problem started exactly after the upgrade to Leap 42.1, I suppose?

KDE version I got from KDE Help -> About

The default KHelpcenter in Leap 42.1 is still a KDE4 application, so it will tell you that it’s using kdelibs 4.14.10, yes.

zypper patch result:

Well, “zypper patch” should show something completely different, that rather looks like the output of “zypper lr -d”.

But anyway, as gogalthorpe wrote (and was my suspicion), you still have a lot of (or actually only, except for the main Leap one) 13.2 repos, and that’s very likely the reason for problems.

See here for how to upgrade properly: https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:System_upgradeTo fix your system, either remove the Leap repo ( to stay at 13.2) or remove all 13.2 repos, and run “zypper dup” afterwards. But with those many repos it might be dangerous.
So better first decide whether you want to stay at 13.2, or want to upgrade to Leap, and we’ll give you further, more detailed, instructions.

But please note that Leap only provides Plasma 5 as desktop. I’m unsure what you are really running at the moment, so please run KInfocenter and tell us what the “About System” screen says. Or run “plasmashell -v” and post the output.
And the content of the file /etc/os-release would be interesting as well, to see whether the base system is upgraded or not. (you can install any kernel on 13.2 as well…)

“zypper patch” my mistake again, copy and paste, but I forgot to copy and was the wrong paste… I was continue to try some “Google Solutions”, sorry for some confusion.

Now I remember why my repo is like that, when LEAP 42.1 was launch the update ask if I want to add LEAP repo and I said Yes, I never did the official upgrade, thanks for the link.

Well, now I did the official upgrade and everything is fine and working well, unfortunately all my KDE configuration was lost (kick off menu back to classic, no widgets and so on…), not a problem, just inconvenient.

Now I’m sure that was a mixed package, not only because it works screen locker, but also because USB 2.0 is working with Kernel 4.1.13.

Strange that update automatically add main LEAP 42.1 repo, and not exclude 13.2 or add the others, but the advise is one nice step above.

Thanks for help!

Yes, that’s “normal”. Plasma5 doesn’t import/migrate KDE4’s desktop settings.
Btw, you didn’t have the “classic” application menu, but “Kicker” which is completely new in Plasma5…

Now I’m sure that was a mixed package, not only because it works screen locker, but also because USB 2.0 is working with Kernel 4.1.13.

Great!

Strange that update automatically add main LEAP 42.1 repo, and not exclude 13.2 or add the others, but the advise is one nice step above.

Well, how did you do the upgrade at first?
If you booted from the installation CD/DVD, it should disable the old repos and add all standard Leap repos (including non-oss, update, and update-non-oss) AFAIK (though I haven’t tried that yet).
