I’m using a clean install of Leap, and am liking it 90% of the time. The other 10% are problems that I need to fix. This is one of them.
After suspending to RAM, when I resume one of the following four things happen:
The keyboard is frozen HARD and can NOT be fixed.
Hitting NumLock or CapsLock does not turn their lights on or off; hitting Fn keys (Fn+F5 to toggle the touchpad on my machine, for example) does nothing; I can’t open virtual terminals; even the Magic SysRq keys do NOT work. It’s as if the keyboard cable had been cut. The only solution to this is to hold the power button for 10 seconds to shut of the computer. 1. The keyboard is frozen hard but by closing the lid, waiting, and opening it again (2-3 times sometimes) I can get it to work. **
This may or may not be the same problem as above. 1. After logging back in, the desktop is a black screen, there are no panels, and only a mouse cursor is visible
. Here I can try to restart plasma5, but it tends to not last, so I have to reboot. 1. **Normal operation. **
Probably happens only 40-50% of the time.
What’s going on here? 1 and 2 happened every once in a while in 13.2 (say, 1 of every 20 times I resumed). 3. Never happened. Now, 1 and 2 happen maybe 40% of the time and 3 the other 10%.
What a torrent of output!I ran journalctl --since yesterday | grep kernel | grep -v ‘temperature’. Here are some suspicious entries (but do keep in mind I don’t really know what to look for). I have NO idea where to go from here. I’m just an ordinary Linux user!
(I’d include more, but the forum limits me to 15k chars.)

That’s some interesting output thanks for sharing. Usually I filter by ERROR
Based on that you might do some google search. Yes ACPCI GPU driver issues are very common and I believe the problem is already fixed but in some more recent GPU driver/kernel version.
I’m wild guessing this might be most relevant for google search :
[drm:radeon_pm_late_init [radeon]] ERROR failed to create device file for power profile
Also I just realized you have a multi GPU setup. I think if you disable the radeon GPU in BIOS it might just work although you will lose performance. (Intel is known for good drivers in the kernel working out of the box). On the other hand battery life will be much better if you don’t need performance
This issue constantly plagues me! My BIOS doesn’t allow me to disable either of the graphics cards, and the dual Intel/AMD combo seems to be the least compatible setup that exists on Linux. This is probably why I’ve never been able to successfully install the fglrx drivers, I suspect.
And unfortunately, this laptop is going to be with me for a few more years.
How about a BIOS upgrade ? Can you check on Toshiba website if this is available ?
The setup is definatelly compatible to problem is that with Linux dual GPU is still problematic unfortunatelly and from my experience might be causing the problems you have. I had similar issues with Lenovo Nvidia/Intel combo. My PC crashed sometimes when I plugged it in an out of docking station. In my situation I contacted. In my case I contacted : https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/506152-BUG-scheduling-while-atomic-Xorg-1227-0x00000002
ibm-acpi-develatlists.sourceforge.net and they told me the bug is fixed starting linux 4.1 so I installed the latest kernel from stable repository and after that never experienced a crash again. The problem is that in your messages there is no email alias to contact
There is indeed a BIOS update available for my machine, but according to the change log it only adds support for a couple new screen manufacturers and un-backlit keyboards, so I’m not sure if it’s worth the risk.
Due to a whole bunch of other problems I’ve been having with Leap / Plasma 5, I’ve installed XFCE, and have been using it without issue for about a day and a half. It uses the initial KDE greeter when booting up, but after that, power-related things (sleep, hibernate, screensaver, etc.) are handled by different software (the visually hideous xscreensaver from 1992).
If this good performance continues, I’ll have to conclude that KDE / Plasma 5 are what’s not handling my hardware properly.
Never would have thought that, but hey… if it works, it works.
Hi, @ OP: maybe the thing with suspend hibernation is hardware related because it works fine here on my pc, and about the kde greeter if you’re using xfce you can remove it and install the LDM (lightdm) greeter that uses xfce and Mate DE ect…
I don’t think there is any risk involved in upgrading BIOS especially on a laptop (unless you want to rip out the battery manually while the chip is being flashed). But hey if it works on a different desktop then it is most likely desktop related This type of issues are usually hard to troubleshoot so use whatever works.
