Thread: How to upgrade to Plasma5 from KDE4?

Unhappy How to upgrade to Plasma5 from KDE4?

I just installed OpenSUSE 13.2, I expected it to come with plasma5, but it comes with KDE4 instead.
    How do I upgrade?

    Two options:

The first is just to install plasma5 session from the 13.2 repo. This option will remove kde4.

The second (and better option in my opinion) is to use this repo:

    http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...openSUSE_13.2/

This will allow you to have both plasma 5 and kde 4.

I tried going to patterns, I unchecked KDE4-Base and KDE4-Desktop environment and checked Plasma5-Base.
I restarted my PC and now I'm in Icewm???

If you install plasma5 session that should pull all that is required.

Logout and choose "Plasma 5" at the login screen.

And maybe set DEFAULT_WM="plasma5" as well in /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager, so that Plasma5 is the default session.

    Thank you, this worked.
I have a few problems now though.
For example, when I try to run Amarok, I get this error message: "Unable to run the command specified. The file or folder /usr/share/applications/kde4/amarok.desktop does not exist."

    Also, should I install plasma5-opensuse and plasma5-mediacenter?

I barely have any of the KDE applications installed, not even kcalc.

Apparently you don't have Amarok installed. Install it.

You have to decide that yourself.
plasma5-openSUSE only contains the license for plasma5-(desktop|workspace)-branding-openSUSE and pulls in the openSUSE branding packages, which contain openSUSE's default settings and the openSUSE theme. If you don't install them, you get the upstream defaults (i.e. no folderview applet and only 1 virtual desktop).

You don't need to install plasma5-mediacenter if you don't want to use plasma5-mediacenter. If you do want to use it, you have to install it.
    I cannot answer that.

    See your other thread.
That's what you get when you do a minimal installation.
