Thread: Can't change YouTube video resolution in Firefox

Post Can't change YouTube video resolution in Firefox

Well, I've finally done it. I've finally went ahead and installed OpenSUSE as my main OS, wiped Windows 7 away and OpenSUSE as of tonight is my full time OS... But that's not what I'm here to talk about. I'm here to talk about a little situation I'm facing, as the title says, I can't change the YouTube video resolution from its default 360p. I have tried clearing cookies and cache, logging in and out of my YouTube account etc., but none of it has worked. The funny thing is, the same thing occurs on my laptop running the same OS but with LXDE. I have updated Firefox via the software repos to the latest version (available on the repos) which is 40.0 on both systems, maybe it has something to do with that? Is there any later version out that I am not aware of? How can I fix this problem?

    Hello,

Either set media.mediasource.enabled and media.mediasource.webm.enabled to true in Firefox's about:config or install flash-player.

    Regards,

    Antoine

It would appear that on Aug 19, Inception did say:

Just a passing thought. Are you sure the particular video involved, is actualy
avialable in the resolution your trying to switch to?

Either way, I've just flagged this thread for further reading. Maybe one of
the smarter users will identify the problem.

If I don't stop flagging threads as interesting, sooner or later, even an
idiot like me, will accidentaly learn something. Now that's a scary thought!

Yes, as it was not just one video I was trying to view, on every video I watched, the only option was 360p, but on another device (Another computer) most of them at least had 720p. I would like to add that this doesn't seem to be an isolated issue because of the fact that my laptop does the same exact thing.

With webm the browser negotiates the resolution with the server. Even
dynamically if the bandwidth worsens or improves.

But if it is disabled, I suppose it defaults to some value. Why you can
not manually change it, I don't know.

not just webm same is true for mp4 (I disable webm), it also depends on your network if you don't have a fast enough connection youtube will keep giving you lowres video. Afaik the only reason to not to see higher resolution is if the original upload was in low resolution, a lot of youtube is 360 some is even 240 it has nothing to do with the end user.
