BTW, if you're a KDE user kopete is worth checking out too.

    thanks guys -
Id prefer to use the kopete but have no idea how to get it to run within just our Lan and not having to sign up for instant messaging with the other accounts like MSM, ICQ etc..

Yes, sounds like iptux is the best fit for your needs. Kopete supports the 'WinPopup' protocol that allows users to communicate over a LAN, but it does then require the samba server to be running though, and for Linux-Linux communication that might not be considered desirable.

BTW, for those interested in sending files and messages dukto is also worth considering and it is multi-platform.

Have a look at ekiga ( used to be gnomemeeting ) this is a video
conferencing software and is easy to setup, when you first start it it will
pop up a config dialogue and if you do not want the internet connection side
then skip the 2 pages about sip connections.

Once it is set IIRC you just input the ip of the local machine in the chat
dialogue or maybe it might automatically add local LAN machines, my memory
is a little bit shaky and also it is a while since I used it but it "Just
    works".

It is in the gnome repo.
