    Default VLC problem

    Hello,

I'm running opensuse 13.2 and my VLC is encountering the following problems:
    • doesn't play the video of mkv files, but it plays the audio
    • for mp4 files it shows like one frame per second

The strange thing (for me) is that if I run opensuse in recovery mode, VLC works fine, beautifully playing mkv and mp4.

I reinstalled VLC several times and made sure it updates from packman's.
I don't know what else to do. My understanding of the insides of operating systems is quite low. Has anyone got an idea of what I should do?

Other video players work fine (kaffeine, mplayer), but my prefference for VLC is related to the easiness of using subtitles.

    Thank you!

Here's the output of two commands that I've learned are important in vlc related problems.

    output of zypper lr -d

That means that your video card or driver doesn't play nice. Probably
you have installed the proprietary driver, which fails somehow, but the
opendriver which is probably used on recovery mode does work. Just a guess.

You have to post your video card, what driver you use, and then somebody
    else will guide you — I think I can't.

Maybe the output of vlc run in a terminal in verbose mode would give a clue.

Then it's likely no vlc or codecs installation problem, but rather related to the graphics driver and/or hardware decoding.

So, what graphics card/driver are you using?
Maybe install the package Mesa-demo-x and post the output of:
    Code:
    glxinfo|grep render
    and/or your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

If it's nvidia, make sure you don't have libvdpau_va_gl1 installed, remove it if it is.
If it's something else, make sure you don't have vdpau-video installed.

If none of the above helps, try to uninstall libvdpau_va_gl1 even it you are not using nvidia, or try to install it if you don't use nvidia and it isn't installed.

I've tried installing the proprietay, then uninstalled it. It din't solve anything.
I hope it's the right output.

This shows that you didn't really uninstall the proprietary driver.
How did you install it in the first place? (packages, or downloaded from AMD's homepage?)
And the Xorg.0.log would even be more interesting now.

    I see.
I installed it from https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:AMD_fglrx , using the one click installation.
I think i used yast when I tried uninstalling it.
    How should I uninstall it?

The VLC problem existed before fglrx installation.
