Thread: Difficulties with activation of a current Nvidia graphic driver

Question Difficulties with activation of a current Nvidia graphic driver

I have dared to try the following packages out according to the version 346.35-4.1 together with Linux 3.17.4-1.2 and 3.19.1-1.1.
    • nvidia-computeG04
    • nvidia-gfxG04-kmp-desktop
    • nvidia-glG04
    • nvidia-uvm-gfxG04-kmp-desktop
    • x11-video-nvidiaG04

Unfortunately, I get the error message "Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module." during the start of the X server.

A fallback driver is then selected which provides me a lower screen resolution than what my primary monitor is capable of.
Which fine-tuning should I reconsider so that the full graphic resolution will be displayed again?

What kernel packages do you have installed, in particular do you have the corresponding devel packages installed for your kernel versions?
    Code:
    rpm -qa kernel*
And those packages are designed to be used with the kernel included in your openSUSE version. So better switch back to that one.

Yes. - The needed development packages are also available on my system.

But are they the right version?

If you want help, please post the output of the command I asked for.

Also you might mention the hardware. Like maybe this is an Optimus based notebook. If so the procedures are different

Optimus stuff is not involved for my graphic card "GT 730".

Well, as long as you don't answer my question, I won't be able to help you further.
I am not sitting at your system, so I cannot know what's wrong.

You might also want to reinstall the kmp package and have a look at possible error messages you might get:
    Code:
    sudo zypper in -f nvidia-gfxG04-kmp-desktop
And check that you don't have the G03 packages installed at the same time. This might happen as both specify they support your card, so YaST/zypper may try to install them automatically.

    Question Re: Graphic module reinstallation

I do not get error messages from the command "zypper in -f nvidia-gfxG04-kmp-desktop" for the two Linux versions I'm trying out.

Only one variant is installed here. - I become annoyed that the automatic dependency checks by the application "YaST2 software management" try to reactivate this version when I would prefer the newer one.

And _what_ output did you get?
If there were no errors, it should work.

Right-click on the x11-video-nvidiaG03 package in YaST and choose "Taboo - Never Install".

The full resolution display works again for the graphic driver version 346.35-4.1 together with Linux 3.19.1-2.1 while initialisation of the corresponding kernel module still fails for Linux 3.17.4-1.2 at the moment.
I observed the opposite situation while I was running the "G03 software packages" before.
