Default How to reuse old Imagewriter media?

    Hi,

I use SUSE ImageWriter (1.10-4.1.3) to write bootable SD cards for my many Raspberry Pi projects. And very pleased I am with it and the process.
However, (isn't there always?) I am puzzled by the dificaulty I have in reusing the SD cards (and any other media that I have used with Imagewriter: USB, Compact Flash) after I have finished with the original task.

Both gparted and y2base (the partinioner in Yast) are unable to sucesfully restore the media to a basic storeage unit (FAT, EXT, Swap etc). Either by deleteing/creating a new partition or by creating a new partition table. The only way I have found, is to pop the media into a Windows system and reformat from there?

Its no big deal, but I would just like to understand what is (not!) happening.

    Best regards, Martin

The last time I tried, I could easily make the USB stick reuseable by repartitioning it in YaST. The only problem is that it might keep the label from the copied ISO...

It is a pitty that you do not tell what the difficulty is? Error message, explosion, all seems to go OK, but no partition table vissible in the end, different?

And what when you use fdisk (use o for creating a new, empty partition table, maybe use n following that to create a new partition in it and then w to write it to the device)?

Hmm.. I thought that it was me as usual make a mess at my self and had similar problems. It works ~80-90% of times to re-partioned with EXT fs on usb-stick for me after it have been used/written to by imagewriter.. A couple of times I had to partitioned/format it whit NTFS(win) first and then successfully with EXT fs.

Thanks wolfi323 for the link in post #2 and:

"So, before reformatting, you have to repartition it again. And sometimes, if this fails, you may need an extra step - because software thinks the stick is a CD and thus not writable":

    Hi
I use wipefs to clean out USB (and normal disks) devices after imaging.

I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one. Not that I am complaining because my USB is my dedicated Live USB and LiveWriter works fine for all of the other Linux distros out there.

    Interesting tool.
You could add it to the wiki ;-)
