Default Incoming mail notification sound problem in Thunderbird

The mail notification sound fails to work in Thunderbird when mail arrives unless I open preferences and click on the icon to play the sound. I sometimes have to click it two or three times before it produces the sound.

After that, any new mail that arrives is announced by the "pop" sound.

However, after I close Thunderbird, and the next time I launch it, the behaviour repeats itself.

The sound is set to "Default system sound for new mail".

(I need to watch this closer the next time, because while I am writing this post, it seems to me that the "Show an alert" bubble also does not show up until after I perform this action ... I will let you know if that is also the case as soon as I have had the chance to check it.

Not a biggie, but wonder if anyone else is experiencing this glitch.

KDE? have you set a default system sound for mail?? recent versions of KDE seems to be hipped mute so you do have to turn that stuff on. Why TB does not keep it's settings is another issue

    ... of course!

    ... ahh, but it does.

The setting remains, properly in place, but the System just fails to provide the sound until kicked in the butt a couple of times.

Note that it was working fine until 2 or 3 weeks ago, then quit after some updates (do not know which, or if that is even just a coincidence).

Also, double-checking the default system sound, I found the same thing now happens in the Application and System Notifications section under New email notify for New email arrived, that is, I need to click the speaker icon 2 or more 3 times before the System provides the sound!

And, more curious, the pop.wav sound there is similar to, but not exactly the same as, the pop sound I get when I click the speaker in the Thunderbird preferences.

... yet, in the Application and System Notifications section under the other items, Accessibility for example, the behaviour is not there. Instead, when I click the speaker icon there, it works as expected, the first time, properly.
