New Kernel?

I see today, there is a new kernel available. <sigh>. Because if the mess with video drivers, I always dread doing this.

Therefore, two questions:

  1. As nearly all fixes are of the local DOS or esculation type, and I am the only user on this machine, and I of course have the root password and can very effectly trash the machine updates or not, is it still advisable to install this update?
  2. If I decide to not install this update, will I run into problems if I decide to install a future uodate? That is to ship one or more kernel updates?

Huh, no. It also caters for many non-security issues. The list covers
two full screens with a size 10 font.

If you are sure the security issues don’t affect you, and you haven’t
noticed possible kernel bugs, then you may skip/delay the update. You
can not be really sure, though.

So I did it. Thanks Carlos!

It didn’t take that long, it’s just that it’s hard on my blood pressure when the system won’t come up after the change and I have to use rescue mode and Ctrl+Alt+F1 and reinstall the fglrx driver before it’ll work again!

But, it’s done for a while!

Why don’t you just install the fglrx driver via the packages in the repo?
You shouldn’t have to re-install it then after every kernel update.
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:AMD_fglrx

But, to prevent problems better remove the manual installation first…

Perhaps that’s where I got confused. My procedure has been to remove the fglrx driver using yast, do the upgrade of the kernel, using yast, reboot and then install fglrx using yast. Getting the system to come up after the upgrade has been a problem. You’re saying I should just update the kernel without messing with the driver?

The more times you do it, the faster you do it

Yes, if you installed the driver via YaST in the first place, there’s no need to uninstall/reinstall it.
The packages take care of kernel updates automatically.

Ah! Well that’ll make life a whole lot easier. A huge thank you to whoever set that system up! ANd a big thanks to you for pointing that out!
