Default Plasma 5 ? What to expect ?

    Hi there
Well , the curiosity kill the cat, and opensuse 13.2 is running real good for me....except the sound, but anyway, I've got that plasma 5 in front on my nose and I'm tented to install it just to try and see, but I wound't like to mess all the system.

Anyone already try it ? Does it remove the default plasma 4.14 or works side by side ?

    Thanks

Installing Plasma 5 will remove KDE4's desktop (kdebase4-workspace).
You can switch back to KDE4 by installing "kdebase4-session" again, this should pull in all removed packages.

I maintain a repo on OBS that contains co-installable packages though, see here for more details:
    http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-k.../msg00068.html
    https://forums.opensuse.org/showthre...2-keeping-kde4
    https://forums.opensuse.org/showthre...-KDE-5-on-13-2

In short, add the KDE:Frameworks5 repo (this contains newer versions that are needed already by most KF5 applications), and my repo:
    http://download.opensuse.org/reposit.../openSUSE_13.2
(you should probably give my repo a higher priority,i.e. lower priority number, to make sure the packages are preferred)

Then install "plasma5-session" (from my repo), and you'll get an additional entry "Plasma 5" at the login screen which you can choose.

My repo contains also many KF5 ports of KDE4 applications, will can also be installed side-by-side with their KDE4 versions (but you can only run them inside the Plasma5 session). Most of those have not been released yet and are just unstable development snapshots, but they work quite well in my experience.

Please note though that Plasma 5 will also change the KDE4 settings (color scheme, widget style, icon set and the fonts in particular) to make KDE4 applications look integrated. To prevent that, you could create a new user for trying out Plasma 5.

KDE:Qt5 is not required at this point (the Qt5 in 13.2 is recent enough), but might be in the future. AFAIK Plasma 5.2 (to be released in January) will require Qt5.4 according to the developers' plans.

Just an endorsement to use to use wolfi323's plasma 5 as explained above repo at:
