is the error from an application (like kmail) or a desktop (like KDE) or
the operating system itself (like openSUSE)?

in other words, there may be nothing in the trash you are looking at,
but somewhere else there is a _full_ trash..

what application(s) were you using when you saw this error? how was it
presented? had you just deleted something? deleted as a regular user or
    as root?

when i delete it from the square desktop folder on the desktop. opensuse 12.1 kde

i just checked and it wont delete it from my home folder either. i guess from anywhere

when i use move to trash option i get error message but i can delete using the delete button from dolphin

when i use the delete option it doesnt go to trash, it must bypass trash

    thanks

do you have a trash icon somewhere? right click on it and select "Trash
Can Settings", in the resulting pop up, what do you have set as the
"Maximum size" and why not just increase it?

but, also you said the trash is empty....how did you learn that? (did
you left click the trash can and look to see what was inside it? and if
it has a lot of stuff, what happens if you close that window, right
click on the trash can and select "Empty Trashcan"

if you are unable to empty the trash can, then please show us the
terminal input/output from these two commands

    Code:
    ls -hal ~/.local/share/Trash/files
    sudo ls -hal /root/.local/share/Trash/files
copy/paste the in/output back to this thread using the instructions

no trash can icon on the desktop. if i go to dolphin and on the left there is a trash lable, if i right click on it the empty trash is greyed out... my only other options there are add entry, edit entry, hide entry trash, remove and unlock panel. in dolphin my trash settings are limit to maximum size is checked, maximum size is set for 10.000% - 43.68 GByte . I havent increased it because if its 43.68 GBs i figure id like to delete those if i have that much but i dont think so..

I wanted my trash go out by itself.

When I delete files they go trash and everything older than 1 day gets
    deleted permanently.

I have even removed the Trash icon - no need for it

    suggestion:
    rm -r ~/.local/share/Trash
Logout, and login again. Your local Trash folder will be recreated.
You haven't moved your home folder to a removable or remote device have you?

ok, i'm totally confused: you trash is empty but has "reached its
    maximum size" of 43.68 GByte

i give up...except, try this: use YaST > Security and Users > User and
Group Management to add a new test user, log out and log back in as that
test user...now use something like Firefox to download
something...whatever, and once you have it down loaded, right click on
it and select "Move to Trash"

then show me, again, the output of

    Code:
    ls -hal ~/.local/share/Trash/files
    --
