Default Thunderbird junk mail control no-work for a long time?

Dear Opensuse Users... I've used Thunderbird for years and years. It seems the last several years, the automatic (heuristic) junk mail scanner hasn't worked in Opensuse, but works as it used to in windows Thunderbird. It's supposed to "learn" junk mail. But what I see in opensuse is that it only "finds" say one in 10 of a particular junk from a particular email address. Sometimes it marks something as junk (the little flame icon) but does not move it to the junk folder. Mostly it misses junk mail. In windows it has a much higher hit rate. I've tried resetting this, and fiddled with various settings, but it just doesn't seem to find junk mail. The only thing that works is making a specific filter, but that is not heuristic...

Has anyone else figured this out for opensuse? (13.1 x64)

    Thank You!

EDIT: I guess it turns out there are several settings which need to be made to get it to work correctly... my bad.
