Thread: Cannot boot OpenSUSE13.1 after update. Triple Boot, LVM and luks encrypted partitions

Question Cannot boot OpenSUSE13.1 after update. Triple Boot, LVM and luks encrypted partitions

Some updates happened yesterday and now I cant boot into Opensuse 13.1.

I feel I have to explain my setup a little bit.
I have a triple boots system on UEFI laptop with secure boot disabled: windows, OpenSUSE and Debian. Basically, half of the HDD space is windows, the other half is divided between Linux distros. Windows partitions were left as they are, linux is set up like this:

sda8 - OpenSUSE EFI partiion. FAT
    sda9 - OpenSUSE boot partition. EXT4
sda10 - LVM partition. LUKS encypted. Within LVM these logical volumes are set up
    - /home
    - /
    - SWAP space

    Same partition setup for Debian

Under normal circumstances, OpenSUSE would ask me to provide LUKS password, unlock the partition mount logical volumes and ten boot. Since the update OpenSUSE shows me the splash screen (it is even animated, fading in) of OpenSUSE mascot standing on this stylized blade of grass (the default wallpaper).

I have tried booting using older kernels that were left on the system, but same thing happens.

Encrypted partition is not broken though. If I boot into Debian, I can unlock LVM partition and them mount logical volumes and all the files are in there.

I probably haven't provided enough details here, but I'm have no clue where to start, so as as for any additional details and thank you for your help.

Try boot with splash screen disabled. On grub menu press 'e' on menu entry, move to line that starts with "linuxefi ..." (or "linux" if secure boot is disabled) and add plymouth.enable=0 to the end of line. Removing "quiet" may also give some more hints during boot. Then press F10 or Ctrl-X.

I've comparing grub entries for Debian and OpenSUSE. Haven't tried your suggestion yet (doing Debian image recovery at the moment), but made some changes to Grub and now I get this

    Code:
    Trying manaul resume from /dev/Debian/debianSWAP
resume device /dev/Debian/debianSWAP not found (ignoring)
    Trying manaul resume from /dev/Debian/debianSWAP
resume device /dev/Debian/debianSWAP not found (ignoring)
Waiting for device /dev/mapper/OpenSuse-opensuseRoot to apper:...-/many dots/-...Could not find /dev/mapper/OpenSuse-opensuseRoot.
Want me to fall back to /dev/OpenSuse/opensuseRoot? (Y/n)
Although it ask me y/n question, it does not accept any input. At this point I need to do ctrl+alt+del to reboot.

Something wrong with LVM. Do you have enough space on /boot? May be initrd creation failed.

Yes, I have 233MB of free space on /boot

and isn't /dev/mapper where unlocked LUKS partitnions go before activating LVM?

My understanding was that this happens on boot:
    1. find /boot
    2. find LUKS partitions
    3. ask for LUKS key
    4. unlocked LUKS partition available at /dev/mapper/PartiionName
    5. look for LVM (in /dev/mapper in this case)
    6. activate LVM
    7. mount LVM partitions
    8. finish booting

So to me it looks as if OpenSuse is vatting for LUKS partition to be unlocked, but never prompts for the key

I've tried your suggestion. Now I can select yes and it tries to find /dev/mapper/OpenSuse once more and when it fails, it asks for root password. Root password gives me console, but when I try
    Code:
    cryptsetup openLuks /dev/dsa10 OpenSuse
it says that there is no cryptsetup command

It sounds like something went wrong during initrd generation. You could try to recreate it manually; something like
    Code:
    prepare crypto container and
    /dev/mapper/OpenSuse-opensuseRoot
    mount /dev/mapper/OpenSuse-opensuseRoot /mnt
    mount /dev/XXX /mnt/boot
    mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
    mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys
    mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
    mount --bind /run /mnt/run
    chroot /mnt
    mkinitrd -v
Output of mkinitrd may gibe a hint.
Could you also provide /var/log/YaST2/mkinitrd.log from your system?

Does this give some insight? "Unsupported kernel (3.7.10-1.40-desktop)" clearly not good, but I'm clueless as to why?

I would ask for a bit more guidance on mkinitrd outpur and preparing crypto container, provided above log doesn't releave the cause.

    tnx

unfortunately not; it only complements normal mkinitrd output that is not captured.

well, this version is indeed too old; did you try to boot all of three kernels?

Just configure access to your root filesystem; you already did it to fetch mkinitrd.log, right? You can further run mkinitrd under "script" command which writes all terminal output into "typescript" file in current directory.

I think I understood what you meant. here is output from mkinitrd -v

    http://www.wepaste.com/mkinitrd/

And yes, I have tried all three kernels - result is the same
