Hi
I was checking on some kopete, and for what I understand gtalk it’s more or
less dead.
So I went to get Skype, but read the we need the 32 bit environment.
I’ve downloaded and Yast was about to instals tons of libraries when I said
: Wait !
What does this mean ?
Only Skype is going to use it, or the entire system drops to 32 bits just
because of skype ?

Only skype.
But it should not be tons of libraries, just a few. You are doing
something wrong.

I have been using Skype sins 2008. It works fine even on my 64-bit environment in openSUSE13.1 and doesn’t take any especial system resources what I can see.
I also have a regular wireless phone that serving both landlines and skype services.

This one explains instructions for 11.4 64 bits, but might be valid for
13.1 as well.

And going up in the text you see other references for installing on a 64
bit environment. For 12.3 the list was:
libqt4-32bit libqt4-x11-32bit libpng12-0-32bit libQtWebKit4-32bit
xorg-x11-libs libXss1-32bit libXv1-32bit libpng12-0
Maybe installing those trigger other deps.

Just installed skype, although I downloaded from skype, I think upon the
installation app, suse grab a package of its own plus the required
libraries …not sure.
After it, a lot of problems with audio, pavcontrol this, alsa that, a
bloody mess.
Anyway, after a lot of visits to kmixer and pavcontrol, I got it
working, not sure why or how , although the mic sound, as a quality of a
gramaphone, but I guess freedom as it’s price

If you install the rpm version, yes, it might install some extra
dependencies. But not all of them, or you would not have to install
those 32 bit libraries yourself.

I think it needs Pulse.
Sometimes setting it up is a royal pain.

I would not call skype “freedom”, au contraire
It is just a necessity when people you need talking to use it. There are
really free alternatives. It is possible to encrypt the conversation end
to end, under your control… but not trivially.

Yeh , you right , but what are the alternatives ?
I don’t even use Skype that much , but I’m force to talk to some of my
clients.
I use to talk with gtalk, but for what I’ve seen, it’s dead … google
doesn’t support xmpp anymore…
I wouldn’t mind to use something else, but I would be talking to the
wall in a very looney room
Skype it’s Microsoft, I dont’s see why Microsoft should care to give
support to skype linux.
But google it’s a shame. They grow bigger with a lot of free
contributions, and now they are closing the apps and it’s becoming a
kind of arena.
Picasa, google reader, it’s a graveyard of dead google apps
But what are the alternatives ? DuckGoGo ? come on !
