Default Linphone not picking up usb PnP

this just started happening on Friday, I performed a dist upgrade at that point and got a new kernel. After sorting through some kernel boot param issues I noticed today that my linphone no longer places the audio directly out to my usb PnP headset.

you can run linphone from the cli(which I did) and asked for verbose output; which gave me a hint:
    Code:
[20140908-09:24:35] [message] Registering all soundcard handlers
[20140908-09:24:35] [message] Card 'ALSA: default device' added
[20140908-09:24:35] [warning] Could not attach mixer to card: Invalid argument
[20140908-09:24:35] [warning] Strange, sound card HDA Intel PCH does not seems to be capable of anything, retrying with plughw...
[20140908-09:24:35] [message] Card 'ALSA: HDA Intel PCH' added
[20140908-09:24:35] [warning] Could not attach mixer to card: Invalid argument
[20140908-09:24:35] [warning] Strange, sound card USB PnP Sound Device does not seems to be capable of anything, retrying with plughw...
[20140908-09:24:35] [message] Card 'ALSA: USB PnP Sound Device' added
[20140908-09:24:35] [message] Card 'PulseAudio: default' added
[20140908-09:24:35] [message] New PulseAudio context state: PA_CONTEXT_CONNECTING
[20140908-09:24:35] [message] Registering all webcam handlers
I think the key from the above is
    Code:
[20140908-09:24:35] [warning] Could not attach mixer to card: Invalid argument
anyone with an idea I'm all ears.

You could start telling us which version of openSUSE you use. And why you did a "dist upgrade" (from what to what)?
