thanks lwfinger! it isn’t often i do so many “don’tdos” at once!

i’m fairly cli literate,so should be able to proceed ok from here.

over vista i copied the wireless sticky’s.

im still waiting to connect up a wired connectio. heboland

hello again list i’m back from the wireless stickieswith som cli results.

one very big disappointmentwas to find that a wired connectiodidn’t work either!

if its easier to get a wired fwwithoutand inslallfw usinonnectivityg only the vistainternet connectivity!

hwre is lspci- guessi’ll have to do that annd ls usb over agai

hope yhis reply doesn’t mak anybody angry there!heboland

This device should actually be supported by the kernel without the need for installing an additional driver.
But you need additional firmware, see here for how to get it:
http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/484106-Broadcom-firmware-is-needed-for-b43-but-I-have-no-network-an-easierwork-around

But you have already been told by lwfinger to

No idea why the wired doesn’t work though. It should.
Have you tried to configure it in YaST?

The wired driver is loaded. As wolfi323 says, from there it is only configuration.

The stickies told you to look at dmesg output. That should have told you that
firmware was missing.

lwfinger, i keep losing my thread reply when i follow the links!

here again is my lessview o dmesg. i may justb send it this time and post back again

What did you expect? That output is telling you that ‘iwlist’ is not a complete
command. You need to add one of those keywords, depending on what you want to see!

Have you installed the firmware? Until you answer that question , I will not
participate in this thread. Your record in this forum is sketchy, and I am
unwilling to waste my time!

It is possible to add a PCI ID to a device driver to extend its internal database of known supported devices.
PCI ID numbers are entered and displayed as hexadecimal numbers. SysFS Dir. is the directory name in the /sys/bus/pci/drivers directory. If it is empty, the driver name is used as the directory name.
If the driver is compiled into the kernel, leave the driver name empty and enter the SysFS directory name instead.

I’m sorry, but it is very difficult for me to understand what you write.
One difficulty is the language you use: run together words, wrong
spelling, broken sentences… At least, please, use a spell checker!
English is not my own language (perhaps half of the people here are in
the same situation), so if you you don’t use the language properly it is
extra difficult for us to understand you.

Then you are using “HTML CODE TAGS”, instead of “CODE TAGS”, and this
makes reading the output of the commands very confusing to read for me.

Code tags are accessed via the ‘#’ button in the forum editor.
See photo

Please, you have to try harder to explain what you are doing, and try to
answer the questions people ask of you.

No, but there is a space in your download’s filename:

frank[5310] cd BMFW
frank[5311] l
no_net_install_bcm43xx_firmware.tar (1).bz2

You have to put the filename in quotes therefore.

tar jxvf "no_net_install_bcm43xx_firmware.tar (1).bz2"

thanktou so much for p0inting that out!quotes i should be able to handle!

i wouldn’t exprct to require root permission to unpack the archive i did usecp from a terminal to get thtarchive off the dvdi bun

You don’t need root permissions to unpack the archive.
You do need root permissions to install the firmware though.

i did usecp from a terminal to get thtarchive off the dvdi bun

You could have used a file manager and/or GUI archiving program as well for copying and unpacking of course, like dolphin and ark f.e.

Apparently you downloaded it more than once, the download program (web browser?) appended the “(1)” apparently.
Or did you add it twice to your DVD project when burning? Maybe the burning program appended it then.

Anyway, just stick to the instructions from this point on and your wireless should work.

Sorry, but your last post is completely incomprehensible.

Did you install the firmware now? (by running “sudo bcm43xx_firmware/install_bcm43xx_firmware_no_net”)
Did you get any error message?
If not, the firmware should be installed.

Then enter YaST->Network Devices->Network Settings and switch to “User-controlled using NetworkManager” on the “Global Options” tab.
Then you should find your wireless network in your Desktop’s networking applet. Just click on it to connect and enter the passphrase if necessary.
