    If you like KDE3 better than KDE4, then use KDE3. It is still included in openSUSE.

    If you miss a feature/have suggestions for improvements in KDE4 then report that upstream at KDE.

    Although KDE4 is unlikely to get any new features any more, especially regarding matadata handling. Kdelibs4 and the workspace are feature frozen for a while already, and most applications are on the verge of being ported to KF5 now. Most new development happens there.

    KDE 4.14 is the last KDE4 release anyway (except for bug fixes). Although there will be another one in December, this will be a mixed KDE4/KF5 release, i.e. it will contain KDE4's desktop but selected apps will already be KF5. Which ones have yet to be decided though, depending on whether they already have a stable KF5 release then or not.

    i registered to post this workaround for displaying metadata for most files. this thread is the top of google when searching for "kde mp3 meta info" .
    create the following shell script ( i called it meta-info), chmod +x , cp to your desktop . then its drag and drop to get your meta info. drag the file onto the icon for this script, and drop.
    this requires zenity and exiftool to be installed.

    Code:
    #!/bin/bash
    exiftool "$1" |zenity --text-info --width 500 --height 500

    But zenity is GNOME's dialog application, why would you want that in KDE?
    Better use kdialog instead, I'd say...

    OTOH, if you install kfilemetadata-ffmpegextractor, dolphin's information panel should show information for most file types as well:

    Btw, a general note related to this thread:
    In KDE Frameworks5 baloo has been stripped down to be just a file indexer recently.

    The metadata, tags, rating, and comments functions are now totally independent of baloo again (though the module is still called baloowidgets).
    And they store the data only in the files' extended attributes, conforming to the freedesktop.org specs, so they should be seen by other software as well.

    So most of the problems and concerns mentioned in this thread should be irrelevant in the future.
