    Default Full Disk Encryption and its affect on CPU

    I have ASUS X44H with K84L board.
    Intel i3-2330M (2.20Ghz) with intergrated Intel HD Graphics 3000, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD. Two Years old.
    currently dual booting Windows 7 and openSUSE 13.1. I want to reinstall openSUSE with full-encryption. How will it effect my CPU?
    When we play flash videos from net on encrypted HDD, does it CPU have to decrypt something and then play or does it play it directly?

    What other loads are on CPU and battery?
    [I don't use heavy loads on this laptop, except Matlab, i guess]

    My experience is that the CPU cost of encryption is too small to notice.

    The decryption is done as the data is read from disk into memory, and the decryption speed is probably faster than the disk-to-memory transfer speed. For memory-to-memory operations, there is no change as no encryption/decryption is needed.

    You post there that you are satisfied. When applicable, you tell what you did to solve your problem. All for the benifit of others that might read the thread later (e.g. after finding it through googling).

    okay, I will do FDE
    and in case of flash from net, i guess video loads in RAM from wifi/lan and plays directly through loaded plugins in RAM, with help of GPU, onto screen.

    I posted the solution and wrote "Solved" in the end there. Anyway, admin of this forum should include the feature of marking thread solved as ubuntu and zillion other forums have.

    When you think so, then you can start a thread in Forums Feedback > Forums Comments/Suggestions ti bringyour arguments. But I can already tell you here that "because it is done at Ubuntu" will not be seen as a deciding argument.

    I have a Toshiba laptop with similar specs (intel i3, intel graphics and 500 gig hd); I dual UEFI boot in LVM on top of LUKS; (1) openSUSE 13.1 (64 bit with KDE) and (2) Arch linux. I have not notice any lag when playing games or watching youtube.

    Usually negligible.

    I have a fileserver here with encrypted data and home, using a plain
    pentium 4 and just 500M of ram, and I don't notice the load. You have to
    actually do measurements to notice it and evaluate the impact.

    Run some jobs now, time then, several times, then reinstall with full
    encryption, and repeat the tests. That's the only way to really know.
