I seem to recall similar being reported previously. Anyway, it might be specific to your card reader hardware. You might want to share those details...
    Code:
    /sbin/lspci -nnk
When you insert an SD card, observe the output from
    Code:
    dmesg |tail

For future reference, best to use [CODE][/CO..] tags like this when posting output

    Code:

Nothing relevant in the dmesg output. It might be better to do
    Code:
    sudo tail -f /var/log/messages
then repeat the insertion. However, I think that somehow the kernel is not alerted to the card insertion. Some research needed...

Googling shows others experiencing this behaviour. Here's one pertinent thread:

    Hi
Just a quick question on the windows side, do you need to install
drivers? In saying that I would suspect since it's a broadcom device
and probably requires firmware, so is the file kernel-firmware
installed? Also next time you visit a linux distro, check the dmesg
    output for the word firmware.

I sympathise with you, but I suggest you participate pro-actively by checking/submitting a bug report. It's the only way it will get the attention it deserves, and you may even find that is fixed in a later kernel version.that using a later kernel Since it is likely kernel related, I'd start here:
