    Maybe you need real Java.

The OP has real java (though I guess you mean the proprietary Oracle one).
The problem is deeper, with openjdk installed you should not get an
    error with http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
I do not get that with openjdk but the proper message that my java is up
to date (same icedtea-web version as the OP).

I've tried the Java (Oracle from http://www.java.com/) before but they're the same

    and Just updated my Firefox

    Acer Aspire 4736
    openSUSE 13.1
    icedtea-web-1.4.2-4.1.x86_64
    java-1_7_0-openjdk update 51
    Firefox 28.0

So changes: applets are now working but still cannot open .jnlp files...

http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp => Congratulations! You have the recommended Java installed (Version 7 Update 51).

http://www-pw.physics.uiowa.edu/das2...mTest.jbf.html => accessing calculator link gives same error as before - ill try to figure out how to send a bug report to icedTea-Web

I would guess that this jnlp file is very old, maybe too old. Have you
    tried some other webstart link?

I just ran your links on an openSUSE 13.1 where I just installed a brand new Oracle Java
    (http://forums.opensuse.org/showthrea...ll-Oracle-Java)

Opening Firefox to the java test, after granting permissions to run the Java test, it resulted in a success... Java in the browser was recognized.

Then opened up your link to University of Iowa, and it resulted in a "file not found -- The URL was not found on this server"
