Network manager can't change a thing - unsufficient privileges ??

When I try to manage connections in network man simply I can’t. then I try to run it as root :

 /sbin/NetworManager

but no window pops up. Through yast I can only select whether to control networking with ifup or with NM but nuthin else…

And wat did you choose?

When you use ifup, you can not use NetworkManager.

When you use NetworkManager, the icon should be in our KDE panel.

if you choose network manager than there is nothing configurable in the network setting panel.
if you choose ifap then you get to configure all manually .

You can use YaST->Network Devices->Network Settings to configure it in the case of ifup.

I’m on laptop at home I use ifup and then anywhere else NM - but case is when NM is up (ifup is off) it connects just fine (default dhcp settings…) but i.e I want to create a wifi hotspot and I simply cannot

YaST should allow more than just switching between ifup and NetworkManager. But most options are disabled if you use NetworkManager.

Could you maybe post a screen shot?

And NetworkManager is a daemon for managing the network configuration. It does not open a window, but just runs in the background.
To interact with it you have to use a desktop applet or “nmcli”.

That is a complete surpise. It would be better that you explained what the “goal” is you are after. There are btw threads here on he forums about creating a Wifi hotspot outt of your openSUSE system (IIRC).

Sorry, I just get an error message when clicking on your links:

Could you please upload the pictures to http://susepaste.org/ ?

sorry, already make that photos custom = you’ll see it. Btw can’t login to suse paste - it requires openID - but my nick isn’t working

Sorry, I still get the same error message.

Btw can’t login to suse paste - it requires openID - but my nick isn’t working

AFAIK, you should not need to login to upload a picture (depends on the timeframe it should be available though).

That worked.

Sorry, I’m not quite able to follow you now.
You said “Through yast I can only select whether to control networking with ifup or with NM but nuthin else…”, but those are screenshots from NetworkManager.

So apparently you actually have switched to NetworkManager in YaST? (then it is clear that you cannot change anything else in YaST)
I had the impression that it’s set to ifup.

Is your wireless actually working? (otherwise the “Enable wireless” switch should not be greyed out)

Please post the output of “lspci -nnk” (if the wireless card is internal).

lspci -nnk

and actually my wireless is working, recently I’ve been conected few times only thru wireless

OK, so what’s your problem then?
Could you please explain in comprehensible words what you are trying to do, and what does not work?
What exactly are you trying to change in NetworkManager, and what happens instead? (according to the subject of this thread you seem to have a problem there)

Again, if you use NetworkManager, you cannot change any settings in YaST. You have to use the NetworkManager applet then, to be found in the system tray in the bottom-right of your screen (in GNOME it’s on the top), or (in KDE) you can also use “Configure Desktop”->“Network Settings”->“Network Connections”.
If you switch to ifup, you can setup your wireless (and wired) networks in YaST, but then the Desktop’s NetworkManager applet won’t work.

That’s how it is.

I’m trying to create wifi hotspot, and I cannot change a thing in that GUI (that gui for Network manager ).

Please describe your exact steps.
Just repeating that you’re trying to create a wifi hotspot and can’t change a thing over and over again won’t get us any further.

What are you trying to change, and how are you not able to do it (i.e. are the settings greyed out, do they not stick, …).

Unfortunately your screenshots are no longer available, but I didn’t spot anything unusual there AFAIR.

And as your subject implies it might be a privilege issue, please also post the output of:

loginctl

Is your user session listed there?
And also:

grep -R NetworkManager /etc/polkit*

Maybe try to set it up as a “System connection”.

Maybe you have to disconnect the normal wireless connection first.

I have never set up a wifi hotspot (whatever you mean with that) myself, but here I can change all settings in that GUI AFAICS.
