Gnome Classic, Gambas, Scilab

I am returning to Suse after being away for about 10 years. While using Debian based distros I was accustomed to using stuff like Gnome Classic, Gambas3, Scilab, gscan2pfd, onboard, and lots of other neat stuff. Is there a secret “official” repository where I can still get all this stuff with out having to download RPMs from mysterious sites and not being sure of what I am getting?

I forgot to mention that I am using Suse 13.1

Yes most of this can be done, though if I were you I would just use openSUSE KDE as opposed to the gnome edition as gnome classic doesnt work the same as it used to, you are better off with MATE or something if you like the old gnome interface.

in any case:

Gambas can be installed here
http://software.opensuse.org/package/gambas3

scalib:

http://software.opensuse.org/package/scilab

gscanpdf (guessing you made a typo)

http://software.opensuse.org/package/gscan2pdf

the only one I dont find a opensuse repo for is onboard.

In any case opensuse has community repositories (much like Ubuntu and debian) and all are pretty much good to use.

yea I saw that software link. I noticed that the official links at Suse started with “download” so I wasnt sure about it. Is it possible to just add the repository in Yast and that way have these packages show up in my search for software?

In general, whn you want to know if there is a package for openSUSE and it is not to be found on the repos you have at that moment, you can use http://software.opensuse.org/search

Oh one more question. I have /home on a different partition. About 10 year ago I noticed that if you do a fresh install on /, and leave /home alone, then all your stuff is still there, so long as you keep using Gnome. But, if you switch to KDE after using Gnome, then stuff just doesnt look right. So thats why I dont want to switch to KDE. If I do switch, then I have to reformat /home and copy all my stuff like .evolution and .firefox and .mozilla, blah blah back over to my new KDE system. So I would really prefer to give Gnome Classic a try. How do I get it?

It should not be a problem to leave your /home (and your and other user’s personal data/settings, etc. in there) as it is. It is no problem to use YaST > Software > Software Management, then use Patterns from the View menu and scrol down to Graphical Environment and check the two KDE entries there and install. You will then have Gnome and KDE both available and you (and all other users) can choose on every login again which one you/they want to use at that moment.

Hi
All you need to do is install the ‘gnome-shell-classic’ package
available from the default install repositories.

zypper in gnome-shell-classic

Malcolm, I did see that on the internet somewhere, but I got faked out by the “shell” part. When I think of shell, I normally think of terminal; but I guess a desktop environment is a shell just like any other shell. I will give it a shot.

Gnome Classic is working well for me; but, I dont see any icons on my desktop. I know this is a trend in Linux to show desktop only in a file manager but I still kinda like to see a real Desktop with icons. Is there any way to get Gnome Classic to show those Desktop icons?

Hi
Via the Tweak Tool -> Desktop and check the show icons on desktop
button.

You can use Scilab from science repository. For openSUSE 13.1:
