Default Thunderbird Does Not Stop When Closed.

    Hi,
Using openSUSE 12.3 64 bit with KDE desktop and find that Thunderbird 24.3.0 does not actually shut down when closed although it appears to have done so.

In consequence when I next want to start T'bird I get an error message stating that it is already running. I have to find and kill the process to be able to start T'bird again.

Not a disaster but annoying and this has been a problem with 12.2 and earlier versions of T'bird. Is it something I do or a bug or what?

Do others experience the same problem?

I am running Thunderbird 24.3.0 on 13.1, not seeing this issue.
Wait a minute, yes I am!

I seldom close Thunderbird and frequently sleep-resume, so it has probably been a while.

You might try starting Thunderbird from the cli
    Here is what I get.
    Code:
    :~> thunderbird

    (process:4025): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size == 0' failed

(thunderbird:4025): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: Attempt to add property GnomeProgram::sm-connect after class was initialised

(thunderbird:4025): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: Attempt to add property GnomeProgram::show-crash-dialog after class was initialised

(thunderbird:4025): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: Attempt to add property GnomeProgram::display after class was initialised

(thunderbird:4025): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: Attempt to add property GnomeProgram::default-icon after class was initialised

What I found was that after killing the Thunderbird process, then restarting, Thunderbird starts and closes normally.

I'll add that in navigating about the GUI this AM , KDE crashed. I re-logged in and all seems fine now.

I suspect that a component of KDE was updated yesterday when I ran a YAST update.
I usually log out then login after KDE components are updated, may have missed what was happening in the update.

If your issue continues, you might try starting thunderbird with add-ins disabled
    Code:
    ~>thunderbird -safe-mode
and see if that fixes it.

Hi and many thanks for the info on your investigation.
I too find that it works for a while after killing and restarting and will try the suggestions but my concern is that at this stage of maturity of both the OS and application we should not have these issues. We are not, after all, in a windoze environment. Is there anybody out there who can file a bug report?
    Regards,

It has happened to me, occasionally, several times over many years. It
    is not new.

It seems that Th. is trying to index or something a big remote folder,
and doesn't want to stop doing it till finished. Perhaps it gets stuck
on some point that doesn't quite work and it enters a loop. Typically,
it clears out on its own after some time. But them, I can get tired of
    waiting and just kill it.

You might have content indexing enabled.

I have been running the ESR version directly from the Mozilla download site since before openSUSE 12.1 and have never seen this problem. I am currently running it in 12.3.

But, I am not using the 64-bit 12.3, this machine doesn't support 64-bit.

I used to have this problem I solved it by removing an app called the tracker-miner.
Just open yast & type the word "miner" in the search bar & if it's checked mark it for deletion, click Accept.
If all has gone well Tb will close completely everytime.

Just to be clear, I assume you are closing TB via "File ==> quit" or
"ctrl+q" rather than clicking on the "x" button?
