    Default Internet Usage reports

    Good day guys

Is there an app that can monitor internet usage?

Basically an app that can print out a report on internet usage on a IP level on the fire wall server\gateway, it will be nice to see who and how my staff members are misusing the internet connection,

My setup works like this...I have a ADSL router connected to the firewall\email server, it monitors all traffic on the network that it handels e.g. port 80 and 25.
Even now I can see the time spend on this forms and total broadband used and for all other users on the LAN.

Is there something like that here? (not on a client\local level the firewall server does the reporting)

    regards

In the past I usually used canned products (commercial).
I haven't used, but I know many use mrtg, likely the most well known and used tool for displaying internet traffic

    Actually,
I've been working on some leading edge technology that could potentially do what you're asking and a lot more.

If you're interested in considering feeding firewall logs to an "Unstructured Big Data Search Engine" based on Lucene (which is the foundation for many if not most of the giant Internet search engines), take a look at the Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana links on my wiki
    http://en.opensuse.org/User:Tsu2

It's not a canned solution, but it enables you to find or discover practically anything in the logs. Kibana is just one possible fronted which is used primarily used to submit queries from a webpage and display the results in various ways (text, graphs). Other frontends are also possible, eg Graphite is a popular choice for many big companies.

Is not a simple solution, but if you think you might end up throwing other types of data or doing some in-depth inspection of your firewall logs for custom results (eg What are the geographical locations of the Internet IP addresses? What kinds of attacks are hitting the firewall and from where? Any unauthorized traffic and if so where and when, possibly who?), then this might become a worthwhile investment. If anyone is interested in this, just PM me and we can discuss.

Depending on where you are, don't forget to follow whatever procedures
are required by your local privacy laws.
