HDD fails to start
A new WD Elements SE Portable 2 TB USB 2.0 external hard drive has one exFAT partition (preformatted) and works on Windows XP fine. I want to make ext3 partition on it but it is not recognised when plugged.
Code:
fdisk: cannot open /dev/sdb: Input/output error
When plugged LED on HD lights and starts flashing after 5 sec. Drive starts, I can hear normal hdd sounds. It is plugged to USB 2.0 port on the back og the motherboard using its onw original (short) WD cable (no extend).

Re: HDD fails to start
Try to open the partitioner module in YaST, if you haven't done so already, and see if its detected there.

I have done so already. It's not detected there either.

Well, you have to look at the last few lines of unfiltered dmesg output
right at that instant.

Re: HDD fails to start
No, I did not update firmware. It still works on Win XP.

Re: HDD fails to start
Could it be your USB port(s) or anything else hard-ware related? Do you dual boot openSUSE/WinXP or is XP on another computer?
