Default plymouth not showing graphical LUKS password screen

    Hello,

I' ve update my opensuse 12.3 instalation a couple of weeks ago to the 13.1 RC1 I beleive it was at that time usinge zypper.I have a vmware virtual machine(which I use on my work laptop) with LUKS encryption for everything except the boot partition.
After the update everything is ok except I do not get a graphical screen when it asks me for the LUKS password, it is text only. During the update I have moved some of the files in boot (grub themes) , and also deleted some initrd, kernel cofig files, kernel images to make space for the new ones as the default boot partition is 150MB. I have tried the following to repair but with no succes:
    - I reinstalled the packages branding-openSUSE, splashy-branding-openSUSE, gfxboot-branding-openSUSE, grub2-branding-openSUSE, plymouth-branding-openSUSE, systemd-presets-branding-openSUSE
    - I selected a different theme for plymouth (spinner) and ran plymouth-set-default-theme spinner -R

Plymouth is working as far as I can tell but the only thing that is not working is the graphical password for LUKS. Is not plymouth that is in charge of this screen?
    Do you have any ideas?

    Thank you in advance.

With such a small boot partition you should remove plymouth, anyway.
That way updates would perhaps fit and you would not have to run risks
    deleting files.

Else, reinstall with a bigger boot.

I've installed a fresh version of opensuse 13.1 (from Gnome live CD version) and the only things that differed from the default install is that I created encrypted lvm and separate partition for home (like the VM that I allready have). After the install I had the same problem, no graphical login for the LUKS password. I upgraded all the packages using zypper but the problem persists.
I'm not sure but I think this may be a bug. If you want other details please let me know.

It may be a bug, but you can not report bugs here, we are not the
maintainers. You have to use bugzilla for that.

IMHO, plymouth is a bug/problem attractor. I remove it from all my systems.

it seems this was done on purpose.
    ++++ plymouth:

    - disable plymouth in initrd if the root volume is encrypted. This
is a workaround until plymouth is able to handle the prompt
    correctly (bnc#834063).

Have also seen this. Not really a big deal in itself though previous graphical screen for bootloader password was better - looked more professional to me.

I installed 13.1 yesterday and have the same problem. It appears to me that Plymouth is not being built into the initrd. When I boot, I also get a text screen for my luks password. After the root partition is unlocked, the Plymouth screen shows up and operates normally.

I ran mkinitrd to verify. With 12.3 plymouth was listed under the "features" section of the mkinitrd output. That is not the case with 13.1

I do not know how to manually include plymouth in the initrd to test my theory.

I agree about the eye candy, but it helps to promote the OS. I try to promote openSUSE in my area by using my computers as an example. When people see verbose output during boot, they assume the worse. People are terrified of anything that looks like a command line anymore.

Thanks for the update. I'll work on other things in the mean-time.
