Thread: Documentation for openSUSE 13.1 KDE

Default Documentation for openSUSE 13.1 KDE

Have just installed 13.1 KDE, from scratch. Where can I find the manuals in .pdf format for download? Forgive me, but here's so much information there on your web site that it's very hard to find what one is looking for.

At this stage, I am mostly looking for information on how to configure the desktop, e.g., background color, font type and size, icon size and placement, launch bar, setting up virtual desktops, etc.

    Thank you and cheers,
    Paul

Usually documentation is not actually needed, you just need a starting point.

Recommend for some common starting points

KDE Application Launcher (by default the green orb in the left main panel) > Configure Desktop

    On the Desktop
    Unlock Widgets > Add Widgets

    HTH,
    TSU

Very fair question. Unfortunately `man opensuse' doesn't seem to work! Sadly, openSUSE has decided to drop official
documention in the form of proper manuals in .pdf format. The most recent version (12.2) may be of some help to you
    though:

    Startup: http://doc.opensuse.org/documentatio...startup_en.pdf
    Reference: http://doc.opensuse.org/documentatio...ference_en.pdf
    Security: http://doc.opensuse.org/documentatio...ecurity_en.pdf
    KVM Virtualisation: http://doc.opensuse.org/documentatio...ook.kvm_en.pdf
    System analysis/tuning: http://doc.opensuse.org/documentatio....tuning_en.pdf

It looks like you could also benefit from a KDE manual. Sadly, I couldn't find one for anything newer than 11.3 - but
you may find this useful: http://doc.opensuse.org/documentatio...kdeuser_en.pdf

Otherwise your best bet is to ask the friendly community here if you have a question!

    Hi
    Where did you read they dropped documentation? It's been moved to here;
    http://activedoc.opensuse.org/
    https://doc.opensuse.org/

What about running the command susehelp?

I didn't say they dropped documentation. I wrote:

.... so please correct me if I'm mistaken but there appears to be no actual official PDF manual for openSUSE 12.3 or
13.1? Active Docs seems to be associated with `openSUSE Factory' with no version number, and therefore cannot constitute
a proper official manual for a given release.

IIRC that opens a dialogue box and has nothing to do with the OP's request for a manual in PDF format.

A transition period...... those documents can be made into pdf's down
    the bottom of the page.

I would imagine that going direct to KDE and grabbing the info there
(since there are many different KDE environments available/in use) I
can understand the lack of them. Else hit the un-official guide?

Following your hints, and doing some searching around, I found a link to an Active Docs PDF of an openSUSE KDE manual
that may of be some help to the OP...

    http://activedoc.opensuse.org/printp...port/html/1064

IMO the html version (and not even mentioning the PDF version!) is far too difficult to find for the openSUSE
    newcomer...

    Hi
    That was a good find

But trying to be realistic (since it's a community effort) I imagine
that only things that would be openSUSE specific (where it differs from
upstream) could/should/would need documenting (as in the Release
Notes)? Maybe you should add that link on the release notes page?

    If you look here:

    http://doc.opensuse.org/opensuse.html

you find links to the openSUSE documentation for several releases, and
in several formats, including epub and pdf.

    I see books for versions from 11.3 to 12.2. 12.3 is missing, I don't
know why (use Bugzilla to report, against documentation). For 11.3 there
is a KDE guide (yes, in PDF too). It looks KDE4, but it is of course an
    old version.

If you go instead to the new site, activedoc.opensuse.org/ and click on
the products button, you find 12.3 there. The books are there, but
apparently only as html. There is a button below for "PDF version",
though (apparently generated on the fly?). I miss the epub version.

However, those books are also available as rpms from YaST or zypper or
apper, the usual way. And PDF is one of the offerings.

Search for opensuse-startup package, for instance.
