I can suggest another strategy.

Copy the files normally, any way you prefer. I suggest rsync without the
checksum pass.

Create an md5 checksum file on the sources.
Transmit the checksum file to the destination.
Run an md5checksum, using that file, on the destination.

The process will signal any modified file.

However, this is not recursive, md5sum files do not record paths.
