Thread: Yast not working in 13.1

Default Yast not working in 13.1

I made a clean install of OpenSuse 13.1. Now Yast is not working. It may ask root password and the icon is jumping some seconds, but that is all. Also in defining installation programs I left out multimedia, office and games, but all seem to be there. I have Intel 845 chip, Celeron 1 GHz, 1 GB and 16GB SSD.

Somehow display controller program reads wrong the size of the display or something else, because the desktop is wider than the physical screen and left part is out of the screen. Even if I move the desktop as far right as can with the display's controls, the Kickoff launcher is invisible. This happens also with 12.1. The monitors are HP LA2405wg and HP LP2475w.

I installed 13.1 also to VirtualBox on W7 and that seems to work fine, although also there are all multimedia, office and game programs, that I left out in defining installation. This is not nice, because uninstalling those afterwards can lead easily to all kind of problems with dependies.

Most of the time it is better to open separate threads for different problems.

Does it run when you type the following in a terminal window?
    Code:
    su -c /sbin/yast2 -
Does your root password have strange characters (like quotes)?
Try to change it to something simple to test.
For this, run "su" in a terminal window to get root permissions (or "Terminal - Superuser mode" from the menu) and run:
    Code:
    passwd
If that doesn't help, please post the last lines of the file /var/log/YaST2/y2log .

Also in defining installation programs I left out multimedia, office and games, but all seem to be there.
I don't understand what you mean exactly.
But you can uninstall all you don't need in YaST->Software Management.

Please post /var/log/Xorg.0.log, but in a different thread please.

Can you change the resolution in "Configure Desktop"->"Display and Monitor"?

Maybe you have to change some Monitor settings? (try to press the "Auto-Setup" button if you have one)

Well, if you have problems with dependencies when uninstalling them, then this is most likely the reason why they got installed in the first place: because other packages need them.
If you want to uninstall them, you have to uninstall all packages depending on them as well. YaST should allow you to do this interactively.

But again, please open a separate thread for each of those problems.
Let's concentrate on the "YaST not working" issue here.

Try starting it from a terminal.

The problem is the same before and after. It is just because of
dependencies that you got them back. To really have them off, you need
to select "never install" or "taboo".

Thank you all for your replies.

I have made some new research and I have to admid, that, what comes to Yast, I was wrong. I starts, but the window opens far left from the left border of the screen, so it is hidden. This happens also, if I start it from terminal. When I select the move operation from the popup, and then draw mouse to the right enough, the Yast window will come from the left. So it has something to do with the dispaly driver.

I have tested with fixed 1024x and autoadjustment, but the result is the same in both cases. I use KWM, but the behavior is the same also without it.

After installation nothing but the Suse drawing is visible. Selecting from the desktop popup I can get taskbar and that is (I suppose) in correct position, because kickoff icon is in top left corner.

I have installed also other Linux disributions, but they are worse. Installation of Ubunty and Debian crached in the beginning, CentOS works fine, but after changing the display with KWM to another computer and then back, the screen is black, only text "No signal". Only boot helps to get back the desktop, all power managements are "never".

I installed Suse 13.1 twice, and allways edited the software selection in the installation not to install games, multimedia and office, I selected never install. Still all are there after the installation is ready. To uninstall those needs more knowledge and patient, than I now have. There are a lot dependencies, and you have to know (guess right) which one to leave or afterwards you are in trouble also with the programs you liked to keep.

I am going to use this installation only to develop and test programs for embedded systems.

I have also another computer with other Intel chip, 865, and the results are the same.

I suggest you post a new thread about your problem with the display
driver, with an appropriate tittle - so that people with experience on
video issues see it at first glance.

However, it may be related to your use of the KWM. You could try
removing it temporarily in order to find out.
